Country Life (Michael Blakemore)

Rating: 3.0

You have to work pretty hard to make UNCLE VANYA boring, and while I have
some complaints with the liberties taken in this rather sunny, pastoral
adaptation (the softening of the doctor's political views, for example),
all of the elements that have made Chekhov's play endure are present
here, along with some fine acting (though Greta Scacchi can't hold a
candle to Julianne Moore's stunning performance in the 42ND STREET
version from last year). Kerry Fox, as usual, is a standout.
