A Little Princess (Alfonso Cuarón)

Rating: 3.5

Terrific children's film should appeal to just about everyone (except,
perhaps, those who've read the children's novel on which it's based...I'm
told by those in the know that the movie takes considerable liberties,
especially at the end). Delightful in every respect, rarely saccharine
and frequently harrowing; a film I wouldn't mind my kids watching over
and over (if I had any). Gripped me in a way that the other recent
American-remake-of-Hodgson-classic-directed-by-foreign-auteur, THE SECRET
GARDEN, never did. Highly recommended.
