Music
What I've been listening to lately:
- Zombie Heaven - Probably the most complete collection of a bands output
ever. If it's not on here, it's probably lost for good. Not to mention
that the Zombies were one terrific band. Granted,She's Not There,
Tell Her No and Time of the Season are all amazing songs as well as being the
band's biggest/best known hits. Nevertheless, there is so much other great
stuff that they recorded that this collection is a must for any pop music
fan. As an extra bonus for the academically minded among you, there is a
68-page booklet with this set that seems to be meticulously researched,
with very extensive interviews with the entire band. The only problem with
this set is that, as an import, it's kind of pricey. Shop around, though -
it'll be worth it.
- Instrumental Surf
- Great genre of music that's making a comeback. No,
really. Most recently, two releases from MuSick records have impressed me and
give an idea of some of the range of music floating around this classification:
Overboard, by the Fathoms, is a darn good surf album, well
within the range of traditional form. The
Space Cossacks'
Interstellar Stomp, on the other hand, while not totally out
of the ball park, is much more influenced by Hank Marvin and the
Shadows
(and others) than strict traditional surf. Both are great
albums. If you want takes on these, as well as other surf music, from
people that actually know what they're talking about (I love
the stuff, but I'm by no means a scholar of the genre), check out the
Cowabunga mailing list. I should have a link to the FAQ around here somewhere...
- Capercaillie - A celtic band that I've been listening to a good
deal lately, due to the fact that I recently got a bit of the
percussion bug and bought a hand drum. In addition to enjoying
listening to Capercaillie, I like their stuff for playing along (not
that I'm any good, mind you - I'm a guitarist by training... see
below). Additional recent celtic listenings: Eileen Ivers, Sharon
Shannon, The Tannahill Weavers. A good starting point is the 20th
anniversary collection from Green Linnet Records - I got started
listening to this stuff by listening to this collection and getting
into bands based on what was on it.
- The Who: Odds and Sods - Finally they've gotten around to doing a
re-mastered edition of this one. About time too. Lots of great music, lots
of previously unreleased tracks... what more could you want. Again, all
the details on that unreleased stuff is a treat for us detail minded
folks. Side note to Who fans: If you don't have the Isle of Wight set
yet, run, don't walk - fantastic show.
- Game Theory - Some of you may be familiar with
Scott Miller's current band, The Loud Family. Well, before that got
going, he had Game Theory. There's a compilation, Tinker to Evers to
Chance, that's a pretty good intro to the band - if you can find it! (I
got lucky) If not, you can do the chronological thing and start with
the cd Distortion of Glory and work from there. More info can be found
at the above link, also accessible through the Loud Family home page.
