Tiananmen Square.  I'm on the north side of the square with the Gate of Heavenly Peace (the one with the big portrait of Mao) behind me.  I have better pictures from a previous trip (when I had a few hours to do some sightseeing) but my scanner isn't working. Tiananmen Square
Rush Hour in Beijing - Bikes and Electric Buses Another sign of Beijing's modernization:   traffic and smog.  Beijing is famous for the huge numbers of bicycles on the streets.  There are still thousands of people commuting by bicycle every day, but more and more cars and buses clog the streets at rush hour (at least these electric buses have no exhaust).
Another rush hour shot.  These were taken out the back window of  the van that the Embassy provided to ferry us to and from our meetings. Rush Hour in Beijing - More Bikes and Electric Buses
Traditional Chinese Architecture in Beijing Yong He Gong (the Llama Temple).  This building, located right off one of the ring roads, is one of relatively few examples of traditional architecture that I've seen in Beijing.  Thanks to Peter Vautier for identifying this building for me!
Hongqiao Market.  This is the third floor where the fresh water pearls are sold.  On the other floors you can get clothing, luggage, consumer electronics, you name it.  Two of our delegation members are visible on the left side. Hongqiao Market - Sharen Tong Shop No. 109
