Hanoi - September  1998 (continued)

There still aren't many cars in Hanoi, but motorbikes seem to outnumber bicycles by a hefty margin.  All day and well into the night the noise of their engines and horns is deafening.  Crossing the street is a kind of zen experience:  you step out into the traffic and walk - don't run - and have faith that they won't run you over.  And I'm here to tell the tale. vnbikes.jpg (32237 bytes)

Another typical street scene.  One of the things they were selling was a large purple cactus-like fruit called a dragon fruit.   I ate one and lived to tell about it. vnvendor.jpg (33028 bytes)
vnbridge.jpg (31846 bytes) There's a lake near my hotel that has an island in it with a traditional temple.  This is the bridge out to the island.
Here's a view of the city from the island in the lake. vnlake.jpg (19622 bytes)
