Campers' Group Bulletin - Winter 2006-2007

Campers' Group Bulletin - Winter 2006-2007

Some people think it gets cold during the winter. Bah, humbug! Those nerds either don’t know how to dress or they want to sit in one place all day. Or both! Don’t be like them--instead if you wear clothes that wick the moisture away from your skin, and if you just keep on moving, then you’ll learn to welcome the chilly air. The forests look so different covered in a soft, white blanket of snow. The night sky has constellations, such as Orion and his belt, that only appear in the winter. Don’t miss them!

To reserve a space on a weekend trip or a day event, call the leaders during the listed time period. If you need information earlier than the dates listed below, call David at 718-897-1448. You can mail us your dues or pay it at the trip or event. One year’s membership costs $12 for an individual or $18 for a family ($8/individual or $12/family if you receive the newsletter by e-mail). Make your check payable to Campers’ Group and mail it to David Levner, 63-36 98th Place #5J, Rego Park, NY 11374.

Sunday, December 25, Christmas Dinner, Manhattan

Sunday January 7, Annual Meeting, Brooklyn
Help us formulate our one-year plan for 2007. Who will write the newsletter? Which parks will we visit? How should we attract new members? Please attend, comerades, we need your opinions! Members only. If you have led a trip within the last year, then your meal will be paid by Campers’ Group. Located near public transportation. NO CALLS BEFORE JANUARY 1.

January 12-15, X-country Ski Weekend, Fahnestock State Park, Carmel NY
Ski or snowshoe along nine miles of groomed trails for a winter’s day or weekend. Or you can just slide down a hill on an inner tube. Rental equipment, lessons and warming huts available. Fahnestock is so close to NYC that a day trip there is feasible. We’ve reserved rooms at a comfortable and affordable motel 10 miles away. NO CALLS BEFORE JANUARY 5.

Saturday, February 10, Winter Party, Bayside NY
Since we all have so many parties to attend in December, we go against the grain and celebrate the winter with our friends in February. Bring a warm spirit, and a dish or dessert to share. BYOB; 4-10 PM. Near the Union Turnpike station (E and F trains) and the Bayside LIRR station--we’ll pick you up from either one. NO CALLS BEFORE FEBRUARY 3.
Janice 347-426-4601
February 16-19, X-country Ski Weekend, Upper Jay NY
Enjoy all winter sports and stay in a comfortable motel in Adirondack Park. Nearby Lake Placid has indoor and outdoor ice-skating rinks; go to Mt. Van Hoevenberg and Cascade for x-country skiing and snowshoeing; or Whiteface Mountain for downhill skiing and snowboarding. All equipment can be rented and you can purchase lessons. Or explore the backcountry of the Adirondack High Peaks Wilderness Area. NO CALLS BEFORE FEBRUARY 9.

March 9-11, Cabin Trip, Tohickon Valley Park, Point Pleasant PA
Enjoy the comforts of a warm and cozy cabin by the flowing Tohickon Valley Creek, or rough it in your tent. It’s possible that, during the weekend, water will be released from an upstream dam, enlarging the creek and making it a nirvana for kayakers. The cabin has a kitchen, bathroom, shower and wood-burning fireplace, and beds for eight people. Bring your own food, utensils and linens. NO CALLS BEFORE MARCH 2. (We had to reschedule this trip because we couldn't reserve a cabin at Tohickon for the weekend of March 16-18.)
