{"id":175617,"date":"2021-01-08T18:14:00","date_gmt":"2021-01-08T23:14:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2021\/01\/08\/not-good\/"},"modified":"2021-01-08T18:14:00","modified_gmt":"2021-01-08T23:14:00","slug":"not-good","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2021\/01\/08\/not-good\/","title":{"rendered":"Not Good"},"content":{"rendered":"<\/p>\n<div style=\"border: 1px solid black; float: right; margin: 0px 10px; padding: 5px; text-align: center; width: 360px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/31z9WIR.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" bordercolor=\"white\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/31z9WIR.jpg\" width=\"350\" \/><\/a><br \/><i>What a Dead Cat Bounce Looks Like<\/i><\/div>\n<p>Though <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/weekly-jobless-claims-coronavirus-01-07-2021-11609978240\">initial unemployment claims fell slightly last week<\/a>, by 3000, to 787000, the monthly jobs report <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2021\/01\/08\/jobs-report-unemployment-december-2020\/\">shows non-farm employment falling for the first time since April<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The earlier stimulus efforts that propelled the economy have ended, and gravity has reasserted itself:<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">The U.S. economy shed 140,000 jobs in December \u2014 the first month of decline since the earliest months of the pandemic, as the recovery makes a U-turn after months of surging infections and delayed congressional action.<\/p>\n<p>The unemployment rate stayed level at 6.7 percent.<\/p>\n<p>The report, the last of President Trump\u2019s time in office, showed the havoc that the pandemic continues to wreak on the economy as the country struggles to control the level of infections.<\/p>\n<p>Employment in leisure and hospitality industries declined by 498,000, the majority of that at restaurants, bars and other food service establishments, which have struggled amid limitations from cold weather and a new round of restrictions across the country.<\/p>\n<p>Employment in another tourism-related category \u2014 amusements, gambling and recreation \u2014 fell by 92,000. Government employment declined by 42,000. These declines offset modest gains in other sectors, such as professional and business services, retail and construction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">\u201cIt\u2019s a damaged labor market,\u201d said Augustine Faucher, chief economist at the PNC Financial Services Group. \u201cBut it is a labor market that is poised for recovery, given the fact that we are seeing the vaccine.
