{"id":175682,"date":"2020-12-25T23:32:00","date_gmt":"2020-12-26T04:32:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2020\/12\/25\/do-not-let-this-man-anywhere-near-to-the-levers-of-power\/"},"modified":"2020-12-25T23:32:00","modified_gmt":"2020-12-26T04:32:00","slug":"do-not-let-this-man-anywhere-near-to-the-levers-of-power","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2020\/12\/25\/do-not-let-this-man-anywhere-near-to-the-levers-of-power\/","title":{"rendered":"Do Not Let This Man Anywhere near to the Levers of Power"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>  Between   <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.reuters.com\/felix-salmon\/2009\/11\/29\/how-larry-summers-lost-harvard-18-billion\/\">grossly mismanaging the Harvard endowment<\/a>, using   <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lawrence_Summers#Support_of_economist_Andrei_Shleifer\">school funds to bail out a corrupt protege<\/a>,   <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/10\/25\/us\/politics\/25vibe.html\">making Obama&#8217;s economic team a cesspool of sexism<\/a>, his   <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2010\/09\/larry-summers-s-legacy\/344091\/\">championing the repeal of Glass Steagall<\/a>, and his suggestion that it might make economic sense to use African   countries as toxic waste dumps, Larry Summers has a long and inglorious   record.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>  Now he is making the talking heads tour, claiming that a   <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/rachelsandler\/2020\/12\/24\/former-clinton-treasury-secretary-larry-summers-comes-out-against-2000-stimulus-checks\/?sh=33cc1e461714\">one time stimulus payment of $2,000.00 might overheat the economy<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>  Assuming that every single person in the United States got a check, (They   won&#8217;t, it would probably be less than half that) this would be about $660   billion, or about 3% of GDP. <\/p>\n<p>  I do not know how Larry Summers has achieved the positions of authority and   prestige that he has, but he may very well be the single most overrated person   inside the Washington, DC establishment: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>  <span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">Liberal economist Larry Summers said Thursday sending out $2,000 stimulus   checks to Americans would be a \u201cmistake,\u201d making him the first prominent   Democratic figure to come out against more direct relief. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Larry Summers is not a liberal economist.
