With the news of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2020\/dec\/13\/john-le-carre-author-of-tinker-tailor-soldier-spy-dies-aged-89\">his death at age 89<\/a>, I am feeling rather guilty about this.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>His spy novels were a marked contrast to the cartoonish James Bond:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/johnlecarre\"><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/johnlecarre\">John le Carr\u00e9<\/a>, who forged thrillers from equal parts of adventure, moral courage and literary flair, has died aged 89. <\/p>\n<p>Le Carr\u00e9 explored the gap between the west\u2019s high-flown rhetoric of freedom and the gritty reality of defending it, in novels such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2010\/jul\/24\/carre-spy-came-cold-boyd\">The Spy Who Came in from the Cold<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2011\/sep\/16\/tinker-tailor-a-z-william-boyd\">Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2016\/feb\/20\/john-le-carre-the-night-manager-television-adaptation\">The Night Manager<\/a>, which gained him critical acclaim and made him a bestseller around the world. <\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, his family confirmed he had died of pneumonia at the Royal Cornwall Hospital on Saturday night. \u201cWe all deeply grieve his passing,\u201d they wrote in a statement.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Given the whole pandemic thing, I have some additional time to read.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m embarassed to admit that that I have never read a book by John le Carr\u00e9.
