{"id":175866,"date":"2020-11-06T19:30:00","date_gmt":"2020-11-07T00:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2020\/11\/06\/of-course-he-did\/"},"modified":"2020-11-06T19:30:00","modified_gmt":"2020-11-07T00:30:00","slug":"of-course-he-did","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2020\/11\/06\/of-course-he-did\/","title":{"rendered":"Of Course He Did"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In New York City, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/11\/05\/nyregion\/james-kobel-nypd-racism.html\">commander of the police department&#8217;s Equal Employment Opportunity Division was just suspended for repeated unhinged racist rants on a law enforcement discussion board<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/KFLt64y.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/KFLt64y.gif\" style=\"cursor: pointer; float: right; margin: 0px 0px 10px 10px;\" width=\"150\" \/><\/a>This is my shocked face:<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">For  more than 20 years, an online chat board called the Rant has been the  place where New York City police officers have gone in secret to  complain about their jobs \u2014 not infrequently using blatantly racist and  misogynistic language.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">But even by  the website\u2019s vitriolic standards, scores of recent posts by a user who  calls himself \u201cClouseau\u201d have been especially disturbing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">Between  the summer of 2019 and earlier this fall, \u201cClouseau\u201d posted hundreds of  messages on the Rant, many of which attacked Black people, Puerto  Ricans, Hasidic Jews and others with an unbridled sense of animus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">He  referred to former President Barack Obama as a \u201cMuslim savage\u201d and  called the Bronx district attorney, Darcel D. Clark, who is Black, \u201ca  gap-toothed wildebeest.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside><\/aside>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">Now,  city investigators say they have amassed evidence that \u201cClouseau\u201d is a  high-ranking police official. And not just any high-ranking official \u2014  the one assigned to an office responsible for combating workplace  harassment in the Police Department.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">The police official, Deputy Inspector James F. Kobel, adamantly denied  that he had written the racist messages. The posts have been taken down  since the Council began its inquiry, and the profile deleted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">Inspector Kobel denied the allegations  to his superiors, a police official said. But on Thursday, he was  relieved of his <b><span style=\"font-size: 100%; font-variant: small-caps;\">command of the Equal Employment Opportunity Division<\/span><\/b> and  placed on modified assignment pending completion of the department  inquiry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">\u201cThat is a drastic step, but  we thought it was the appropriate step due to the nature of his given  assignment as well as the allegations and what we have learned thus  far,\u201d the police commissioner, Dermot F. Shea, said. He added that the  comments posted by \u201cClouseau\u201d were \u201cutterly disgusting.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This guy is a deputy inspector.&nbsp; They would not be going after him so aggressively unless they had him dead to rights on this.&nbsp; (The cynic in me considers the possibility that he is being taken down to prevent evidence of law enforcement misconduct from becoming public).<\/p>\n<p>BTW, there is no reason that the rant should not be routinely monitored by internal affairs and civil rights and EEOC staffers.<\/p>\n<p>A racist garbage man can screw up your recyclables, but a racist cop can make you dead.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In New York City, the commander of the police department&#8217;s Equal Employment Opportunity Division was just suspended for repeated unhinged racist rants on a law enforcement discussion board.
