{"id":175884,"date":"2020-11-02T19:56:00","date_gmt":"2020-11-03T00:56:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2020\/11\/02\/headline-of-the-day-6\/"},"modified":"2020-11-02T19:56:00","modified_gmt":"2020-11-03T00:56:00","slug":"headline-of-the-day-6","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2020\/11\/02\/headline-of-the-day-6\/","title":{"rendered":"Headline of the Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p>  <span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\"><b><span style=\"font-size: 130%; font-variant: small-caps;\">We Can&#8217;t Follow Obama Back to Brunch<\/span><\/b><\/span>  <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>    <span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyposter.com\/p\/we-cant-follow-obama-back-to-brunch\">The Daily Poster<\/a><\/span>  <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>  David Sirota and Andrew Perez offer a long overdue explanation of how Donald   John Trump is not the disease, he is the symptom.<\/p>\n<p>Seriously, if we give politics to the people who screwed everything up  in the first place, we are setting the table for someone even worse than  Donald Trump.: <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>  <span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">In the closing hours of the 2020 election, Donald Trump is dishonestly   <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realdonaldtrump\/status\/1322954692176039943?s=21\">casting<\/a>  his reelection bid as a crusade against the corrupt swamp that he helped   expand and   <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-campaign-hotel-business-profits\/\">profited from<\/a>, while Democrats are promising that if Trump is defeated, voters will   finally be able to go back to brunch as the Washington establishment returns   itself to power. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">  The former\u2019s message is laughably dishonest, the latter\u2019s message is   profoundly cynical and potentially dangerous. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">  To counter Trump\u2019s assault, the Democratic campaign this weekend returned to   Flint, Michigan \u2014 the place the Obama administration left to   <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2016\/may\/04\/flint-water-crisis-a-shadow-on-obamas-legacy\">suffer<\/a>  through a horrific toxic water crisis,   <a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/news\/michigan\/flint-water-crisis\/2018\/02\/15\/governor-rick-snyder-flint-water-crisis\/110463996\/\">exacerbated<\/a>  by Michigan\u2019s then-Republican governor (who has since   <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/rick-snyder-michigan-proud-republican-vote-biden\">endorsed<\/a>  Biden). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">  During the   <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rev.com\/blog\/transcripts\/joe-biden-barack-obama-campaign-event-speech-transcript-flint-mi-october-31\">event<\/a>, Biden declared that during his last tour of duty as vice president, we   \u201cwent through eight years without one single trace of scandal. Not one single   trace of scandal. It\u2019s going to be nice to return to that.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">  This was the party\u2019s flaccid message in the   <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/news\/flint\/2018\/09\/more_than_half_of_flints_child.html\">nation\u2019s poorest city<\/a>, a former General Motors manufacturing hub destroyed by deindustrialization   and   <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freep.com\/story\/opinion\/contributors\/2016\/03\/05\/us-trade-policies-proved-disastrous-detroit-flint\/81339976\/\">offshoring<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">  It is true that the Obama years were not defined by petty bullshit that is   routinely called \u201cscandalous.\u201d However, his two terms were hardly free of   <i>actual<\/i> scandals. They were just the type of scandals that ruin regular   people\u2019s lives, but not the lives of people who wear expensive suits to work   in Washington. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">  Obama helmed a presidency   <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/analysis-shares-obama\/wall-street-puts-its-money-behind-obama-idUKNOA53525520080605\">bankrolled by Wall Street donors<\/a>  that refused to prosecute a single banker who engineered a financial crisis   that destroyed millions of lives. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">  He turned promises of significant health care reform into legislation that   included a few positive consumer protections, but also enriched and   strengthened the power of private insurance companies and   <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2010\/02\/why-obama-dropped-the-public-option\/346546\/\">dropped<\/a>  a   <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politifact.com\/factchecks\/2009\/dec\/23\/barack-obama\/public-option-obama-platform\/\">promised<\/a>  public option.&nbsp; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">  He acknowledged the threat of climate change, but then publicly   <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/5dfbc1aa17701ae219239caad0bfefb2\">demanded<\/a>  credit from the fossil fuel industry for helping boost oil production during a   climate apocalypse. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">  He   <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/blog-briefing-room\/news\/146091-obama-in-2007-ill-walk-on-that-picket-line-if-bargaining-rights-threatened\">pledged<\/a>  to walk picket lines if workers\u2019 union rights were under attack, but then he   promptly   <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/abandoning-efca-is-obamas_b_414209\">walked away from promised labor law reform<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>  <span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/iChu6u8.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/iChu6u8.png\" style=\"cursor: pointer; float: right; margin: 0px 0px 10px 10px;\" width=\"200\" \/><\/a>And yes, Obama\u2019s administration   <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2016\/may\/04\/flint-water-crisis-a-shadow-on-obamas-legacy\">slow-walked<\/a>  the response to the environmental catastrophe in Flint, Michigan. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">  That refrain represents a longing that has pervaded Democratic politics in the   Trump years, embodied by the now-infamous   <a href=\"javascript:void(0)\">protest signs<\/a> insisting that \u201cif Hillary was   president, we\u2019d all be at brunch.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">  However, Obama\u2019s Flint speech went further. Echoing a previous refrain from   <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/michaelbennet\/status\/1158806845953323008?lang=en\">Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet<\/a>, it was a call to resurrect Brunch Liberalism whereby large swaths of the   American left disengage and defer in much the same way it did during the Obama   administration, to disastrous effect. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">  Though it is now forgotten history, the history <i>is<\/i> clear: After years   of mass protest and activism against the George W. Bush administration, many   liberal activists, voters and advocacy groups went to brunch after the 2008   election, fell in line and refused to pressure the new administration to do   much of anything. Those that dared to speak out were often   <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/SB10001424052748703808904575025030384695158\">berated<\/a>  and <a href=\"https:\/\/durangoherald.com\/articles\/9964\">shamed<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">  In touting a presidency we don\u2019t have to think much about, Obama conjures the   notion of a Democratic administration once again insulated from pressure from   an electorate whose poorer populations are too busy trying to survive, and   whose affluent liberals are thrilled to be back at Sunday morning brunch after   watching an MSNBC host reassure them that everything is All Good. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>We cannot allow a corrupt and increasingly geriatric Democratic Party establishment (There is no Democratic Party establishment) to continue business as usual.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We Can&#8217;t Follow Obama Back to Brunch \u2014The Daily Poster David Sirota and Andrew Perez offer a long overdue explanation of how Donald John Trump is not the disease, he is the symptom.
