{"id":175938,"date":"2020-10-19T18:36:00","date_gmt":"2020-10-19T23:36:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2020\/10\/19\/fascists-defeated-in-bolivia\/"},"modified":"2020-10-19T18:36:00","modified_gmt":"2020-10-19T23:36:00","slug":"fascists-defeated-in-bolivia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2020\/10\/19\/fascists-defeated-in-bolivia\/","title":{"rendered":"Fascists Defeated in Bolivia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Despite the best efforts to destroy the left wing Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) by the racist white elites in La Paz, as well as efforts by tye US state seucrity apparatus to overthrow the government, including a fraudulent claim of electoral fraud by the OAS, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2020\/oct\/19\/bolivia-election-exit-polls-suggest-thumping-win-evo-morales-party-luis-arce\">they outright won the first round of elections<\/a> today.<\/p>\n<p>The election, though the numbers are not official yet, are so overwhelming that the people who promulgated the coup have conceded.<\/p>\n<p>My guess is that during the interregnum, the right will attempt to do whatever they can to privatize public resources and otherwise hamstring the MAS, despite the fact that the MAS presided over historic economic success and a reduction in poverty over its 14 years in power.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;Actually, the right will try to hamstring MAS <b>BECAUSE<\/b> it presided over historic economic success and a reduction in poverty over its 14 years in power.<\/p>\n<p>After all, the exiting president was not only a right winger, but she thought that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2020\/jan\/27\/bolivian-christians-evo-morales-indigenous-catholic-protestant\">the indigenous populace was literally Satanic<\/a>:&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">Evo Morales\u2019s leftwing party is celebrating a stunning political comeback after its candidate appeared to trounce rivals in Bolivia\u2019s presidential election. <\/p>\n<p>The official results of Sunday\u2019s twice-postponed election had yet to be announced on Monday afternoon, but exit polls projected that Luis Arce, the candidate for Morales\u2019s Movimiento al Socialismo (Mas), had secured more than 50% of the vote while his closest rival, the centrist former president Carlos Mesa, received about 30%. <\/p>\n<p>Mesa conceded defeat on Monday lunchtime, telling supporters that a quick count showed a \u201cvery convincing and very clear\u201d result. \u201cThere is a large gap between the first-placed candidate and us \u2026 and, as believers in democracy, it now falls to us \u2026 to recognise that there is a winner in this election,\u201d Mesa said <\/p>\n<p>Arce, a former finance minister under Morales, had earlier claimed victory in a late-night broadcast from La Paz. \u201cWe have reclaimed democracy and above all we have reclaimed hope,\u201d said the 57-year-old UK-educated economist, who is widely known as Lucho.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Even Morales\u2019s nemesis, the rightwing interim president, Jeanine \u00c1\u00f1ez, conceded that the left had come out on top. \u201cWe do not yet have the official count, but the data we do have shows that Mr Arce [has] \u2026 won the election. I congratulate the winners and ask them to govern thinking of Bolivia and of democracy,\u201d \u00c1\u00f1ez <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JeanineAnez\/status\/1318048552191483904?s=20\">tweeted<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p>For \u00c1\u00f1ez\u2019s outgoing conservative interim government, which took power after Morales\u2019s banishment, it was a stinging rebuke. \u201cIt tells us that the rightwing in Bolivia has no broad political support \u2013 not even close,\u201d Shultz said. \u201cThe rightwing was given a chance to govern and proved that it is only interested in its own power and in itself and has contempt for the indigenous and poor of the country. They demonstrated that by pretending they had legitimacy that they didn\u2019t, by overseeing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2019\/nov\/20\/bolivia-el-alto-violence-death-protest\">real human rights abuses<\/a> and impunity, and by being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2020\/jul\/03\/bolivia-coronavirus-pandemic\">incompetent and corrupt in their governance<\/a>.
