Bastian, chief judge of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Washington, said policies put in place under DeJoy \u201clikely will slow down delivery of ballots\u201d this fall, creating a \u201csubstantial possibility that many voters will be disenfranchised and the states may not be able to effectively, timely, accurately determine election outcomes.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">\u201cThe states have demonstrated that the defendants are involved in a politically motivated attack on the efficiency of the Postal Service,\u201d Bastian said in brief remarks after a 2\u00bd-hour hearing in Yakima. \u201cThey have also demonstrated that this attack on the Postal Service is likely to irreparably harm the states\u2019 ability to administer the 2020 general election.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2b00fe;\">The ruling \u2014 the first major decision to come out of several lawsuits <a data-xslt=\"_http\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/at-least-20-states-plan-to-sue-the-us-postal-service-over-service-delays-threat-to-election\/2020\/08\/18\/c6ca2dc6-e166-11ea-b69b-64f7b0477ed4_story.html\">filed <\/a>by states against the Postal Service \u2014 was a victory for Democratic state officials who view Trump\u2019s persistent attacks on mail voting and DeJoy\u2019s operational changes as part of a concerted effort to impede the vote on Nov. 3.
