{"id":176130,"date":"2020-08-29T19:38:00","date_gmt":"2020-08-30T00:38:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2020\/08\/29\/this-is-not-a-calm-man\/"},"modified":"2020-08-29T19:38:00","modified_gmt":"2020-08-30T00:38:00","slug":"this-is-not-a-calm-man","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2020\/08\/29\/this-is-not-a-calm-man\/","title":{"rendered":"This is Not a Calm Man"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>The largest of recipient of corporate PAC money among the Democrats in Congress, Richard Neal has a primary in a few days, and it is pretty clear that he is crapping his pants over this, as shown by <a href=\"https:\/\/sirota.substack.com\/p\/rep-richie-neal-sends-threatening\">his campaign has sent a cease and desist letter threatening a libel suit to media outlets to suppress ads by his primary opponent<\/a>.<\/div>\n<p>This is not someone confident of the outcome of the primary:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">Facing a spirited progressive primary challenge, U.S. Rep. Richard Neal, D-Mass. is pressuring a local television station to pull down an ad criticizing his reliance on corporate PAC money, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/publicfiles.fcc.gov\/api\/manager\/download\/564a9d47-5159-1190-590c-7cc24da9d451\/0fd0682e-088e-43c9-85c5-0d42a3b653fb.pdf\">letter<\/a> obtained by TMI from Neal\u2019s attorney. Neal\u2019s attempt to block Democratic primary voters from seeing the ads about his campaign financing comes at the very moment his reelection bid is being <a href=\"https:\/\/sirota.substack.com\/p\/scoop-hospitals-bankroll-the-democrat\">bankrolled<\/a> by donors from industries with business before his congressional committee.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Democrats\u2019 super PAC, the group behind the ad, spent at least <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/danielmarans\/status\/1295412833916784647\">$150,000<\/a> to have the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/danielmarans\/status\/1295412833916784647\">30-second television spot<\/a> run through the entire Democratic National Convention. The ad alleges that Neal \u201ctook more money from corporations than any other member of Congress\u201d and says he \u201chasn\u2019t held a town hall in years.\u201d The group says the station has not pulled down the ad.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have full power to reject the ad for any reason,\u201d wrote Neal\u2019s attorney Brian Svoboda of the Democratic powerhouse law firm Perkins Coie to WWLP-22News, a local NBC affiliate. \u201cTo attack Representative Neal\u2019s reputation in his community, the ad purposely confuses the illegal corporate contributions of which it falsely accuses him, with the entirely legal contributions he actually received from PACs \u2014 i.e., entities which receive voluntary, personal contributions from corporate and union employees, shareholders and their families, and make lawful contributions from those funds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Neal\u2019s counsel called the commercial \u201cdefamatory\u201d and implied that the station could face legal consequences: \u201cBecause you need not run this ad, you enjoy no immunity from liability for its false claims, and are fully responsible for the defamation and any other torts that might result from their dissemination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p>In February, Sludge reported that Neal had been the <a href=\"https:\/\/readsludge.com\/2020\/02\/18\/richard-neal-is-1-in-corporate-pac-donations\/\">largest congressional recipient<\/a> of money from corporate and business-affiliated political action committees (PACs) in 2019. Neal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/political-action-committees-pacs\/top-recipients?cycle=2020&amp;type=B\">has received nearly $2 million<\/a> from these PACs this cycle, and it accounts for more than 53 percent of his total fundraising, according to OpenSecrets.
