{"id":176268,"date":"2020-07-24T18:55:00","date_gmt":"2020-07-24T23:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2020\/07\/24\/not-good-3\/"},"modified":"2020-07-24T18:55:00","modified_gmt":"2020-07-24T23:55:00","slug":"not-good-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2020\/07\/24\/not-good-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Not Good"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>The explosion of Covid-19 cases in the United States have just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/unemployment-benefits-weekly-jobless-claims-coronavirus-11595444039\">reversed the trend in initial unemployment claims<\/a>.<\/div>\n<p>This is not a surprise.<\/p>\n<p>One wonders what happens when the supplemental unemployment payments end next week:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">Filings for weekly unemployment benefits rose for the first time in nearly four months as some states rolled back reopenings because of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/news\/collection\/coronavirus0312-256f2943?mod=theme_coronavirus-ribbon\">the coronavirus pandemic<\/a>, a sign the jobs recovery could be faltering. <\/p>\n<p>Initial unemployment claims <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/ui\/data.pdf\"> rose by a seasonally adjusted 109,000 <\/a>to 1.4 million for the week ended July 18, the Labor Department said Thursday, halting what had been a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/u-s-surge-in-unemployment-claims-expected-to-continue-11586424605\">steady descent from a peak <\/a>of 6.9 million in late March, when the pandemic and business closures shut down parts of the U.S. economy. <\/p>\n<p>The increase followed a period where claims had settled around 1.3 million a week, well above the pre-pandemic record of 695,000 in 1982.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is going to get ugly.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The explosion of Covid-19 cases in the United States have just reversed the trend in initial unemployment claims.
