{"id":176369,"date":"2020-07-02T00:35:00","date_gmt":"2020-07-02T05:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2020\/07\/02\/no-just-no\/"},"modified":"2020-07-02T00:35:00","modified_gmt":"2020-07-02T05:35:00","slug":"no-just-no","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2020\/07\/02\/no-just-no\/","title":{"rendered":"No.  Just No."},"content":{"rendered":"<div>A group of what I can only describe of excessively woke photojournalists have proposed a,  &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/fair.org\/home\/photographers-grapple-with-informed-consent-in-uprising\/\">Photo bill of rights<\/a>,&#8221; which explicitly gives participants in protests to right to refuse to be photographs.<\/div>\n<p>Let me be clear here:  This is completely and totally wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone who allows the subject of their story to be dictated by their subject is not a journalist, they are a stenographer.<\/p>\n<p>They are not talking about the coverage of private citizens  in their private lives, they are talking about people engaged in public demonstrations to influence policy.<\/p>\n<p>The question is simple:  Would you give this right to a counter-protester who was a member of the Klu Klux Klan of a Neo-Nazi group?<\/p>\n<p>The answer, of course, is no, not ever.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">A new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.photobillofrights.com\/\">Photo Bill of Rights<\/a>, inspired by the COVID-19 pandemic and the current uprising against police brutality, has caused fissures in the American photojournalism community and raised an important question about \u201cinformed consent\u201d in photographing protesters.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p>But the bill\u2019s language about how photographers should use \u201cinformed consent,\u201d especially in the context of the current protests against police brutality, has caused a stir among journalists: <\/p>\n<p>\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p>At the latter organization, this has caused tensions. Photojournalist <a href=\"http:\/\/noahbergerphoto.com\/\">Noah Berger<\/a>, who left the NPPA because it signed onto the bill of rights, said in a phone interview that it has long been understood that photographing people gathered in a public space for a protest has always been fair game, and that the language of the statement only furthers the right-wing smear that journalists are \u201cfake news,\u201d or an opposition movement.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A group of what I can only describe of excessively woke photojournalists have proposed a, &#8220;Photo bill of rights,&#8221; which explicitly gives participants in protests to right to refuse to be photographs.
