{"id":176475,"date":"2020-06-07T19:59:00","date_gmt":"2020-06-08T00:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2020\/06\/07\/live-by-the-troll-die-by-the-troll\/"},"modified":"2020-06-07T19:59:00","modified_gmt":"2020-06-08T00:59:00","slug":"live-by-the-troll-die-by-the-troll","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2020\/06\/07\/live-by-the-troll-die-by-the-troll\/","title":{"rendered":"Live by the Troll, Die by the Troll"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Following the backlash soliciting and publishing an opinion piece from Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) where he called for the use of the active military to use lethal force against protesters, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/06\/07\/business\/media\/james-bennet-resigns-nytimes-op-ed.html\">James Bennet has been fired as Opinion Editor<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>They claim that this is a &#8220;resignation&#8221; but make no mistake, it was a firing.<\/p>\n<p>Bennet thought that his role as editor was to publish cartoonish trolls for click-throughs, typified by his hiring of Bret &#8220;Bedbug&#8221; Stephens and Bari &#8220;Shanda fur die Goyim&#8221; Weiss.<\/p>\n<p>He finally went a troll too far:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">James Bennet resigned on Sunday from his job as the editorial page editor of The New York Times, days after the newspaper\u2019s opinion section, which he oversaw, published a much-criticized Op-Ed by a United States senator calling for a military response to civic unrest in American cities.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u201cLast week we saw a significant breakdown in our editing processes, not the first we\u2019ve experienced in recent years,\u201d said A. G. Sulzberger, the publisher, in a note to the staff on Sunday announcing Mr. Bennet\u2019s departure.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">In a brief interview, Mr. Sulzberger added: \u201cBoth of us concluded that James would not be able to lead the team through the next leg of change that is required.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is not what one calls a conciliatory statement.&nbsp; Sulzberger basically called him out as incompetent when explaining why he was fired.<\/p>\n<p>Ouch. <\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s hoping that Stephens and Weiss head out the door as well, particularly the former, as Stephens has made it a practice to harry and intimidate anyone who criticizes him.&nbsp; (Bedbug story <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/2019\/08\/27\/bret-stephens-bedbug-david-karpf-twitter\/\">here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>This entire affair does appear to imply that the <i>New York Times<\/i> is a tremendously toxic place to work.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Following the backlash soliciting and publishing an opinion piece from Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) where he called for the use of the active military to use lethal force against protesters, James Bennet has been fired as Opinion Editor.
