{"id":176615,"date":"2020-05-04T19:04:00","date_gmt":"2020-05-05T00:04:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2020\/05\/04\/this-woman-is-a-walking-cancer\/"},"modified":"2020-05-04T19:04:00","modified_gmt":"2020-05-05T00:04:00","slug":"this-woman-is-a-walking-cancer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2020\/05\/04\/this-woman-is-a-walking-cancer\/","title":{"rendered":"This Woman is a Walking Cancer"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Despite the recent bailout law making it illegal, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2020\/05\/01\/devos-sued-for-seizing-student-loan-borrowers-wages-during-pandemic-228519\">Betsy DeVos is still garnishing student debt borrowers wages<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Given that DeVos has consistently sabotaged efforts to offer relief to student loan debtors.&nbsp; It has been one of her signature initiatives, so I am not buying that this is any sort of oversight, this is flat out malice:&nbsp; <\/div>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is continuing to garnish the wages of federal student loan borrowers who fall behind on payments even though Congress suspended the practice in the economic rescue package, according to a new lawsuit. <\/p>\n<p>An upstate New York woman who works as a home health aide for less than $13 an hour <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.dcd.217544\/gov.uscourts.dcd.217544.1.0_1.pdf\">claimed in the lawsuit<\/a>, filed late Thursday, that the federal government seized more than $70 from her paycheck as recently as last week \u2014 nearly a full month after President Donald Trump signed the CARES Act into law. She is suing on behalf of about 285,000 borrowers whose wages are being garnished, according to the lawsuit. <\/p>\n<p>DeVos first announced in March that she would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2020\/03\/24\/exclusive-devos-halts-collection-of-defaulted-federal-student-loans-146929\">take administrative action to automatically stop the Education Department<\/a> from seizing the wages \u2014and tax refunds \u2014 of defaulted student loan borrowers for at least two months. Congress then included that policy in the CARES Act and extended it, prohibiting the Education Department from garnishing wages or tax refunds through Sept. 30. <\/p>\n<p>But the proposed class action lawsuit claims that the Education Department hasn\u2019t actually halted the practice and is continuing to garnish wages in violation of the CARES Act. It cites a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/education\/2020\/04\/21\/wage-garnish-student-loans-education-department\/\">Washington Post story<\/a> that said the department had not sent formal letters to tell employers to stop withholding money from borrowers&#8217; paychecks on behalf of the government.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: blue;\"> <\/span>She is in the running for being the most contemptible member of the Trump administration, and this is against remarkably stiff competition.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Despite the recent bailout law making it illegal, Betsy DeVos is still garnishing student debt borrowers wages.
