Gretchen Whitmer (D) was unmoved, deciding to extend Michigan\u2019s state-of-emergency declaration against the legislature\u2019s wishes and without its approval.<\/p>\n<p>Whitmer\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/whitmer\/0,9309,7-387-90487-527721--,00.html\"> executive actions<\/a> on Thursday, which extend various business closures and the emergency declaration to May 28, capped a remarkable day at the Michigan State Capitol, complete with gun-toting protesters and impassioned speeches on the House floor by Republican lawmakers trying to curtail Whitmer\u2019s power.<\/p>\n<p>Outside the House chamber, the protesters crammed into the hallway and stairwell, periodically chanting, \u201cLock her up!\u201d and \u201cLet us in!\u201d Their chanting could be heard faintly from the House floor \u2014 and ultimately, the Republicans gave the protesters what they wanted: a refusal to extend Whitmer\u2019s emergency declaration.
