{"id":176658,"date":"2020-04-23T18:55:00","date_gmt":"2020-04-23T23:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2020\/04\/23\/i-cant-even-2\/"},"modified":"2020-04-23T18:55:00","modified_gmt":"2020-04-23T23:55:00","slug":"i-cant-even-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2020\/04\/23\/i-cant-even-2\/","title":{"rendered":"I Can&#8217;t Even"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I don&#8217;t know why centrist Democrats hate progressives more than they hate Donald Trump, but it is clear that they are willing to destroy themselves to troll progressives.<\/p>\n<p>Case in point is the public admission that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-04-23\/larry-summers-advising-biden-campaign-on-economic-recovery\">the Biden campaign is consulting with Larry Summers on the economy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It appears that the whole &#8220;Own the Libs&#8221; shtick is something that is shared by both Republicans and centrists.<\/p>\n<p>Why else hire a glib, obnoxious, incompetent, (Obama stimulus, repealing Glass Steagall) and corrupt (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecrimson.com\/article\/2006\/2\/10\/tawdry-shleifer-affair-stokes-faculty-anger\/\">Andrei Shleifer<\/a>) lightning rod.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s pretty clear that the self-declared &#8220;Adults in the room&#8221; simply aren&#8217;t:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">Former Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers is advising Joe Biden\u2019s  presidential campaign on economic policy, including its plans to revive  the U.S. economy after the coronavirus pandemic, according to five  people familiar with his involvement.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">The Obama and Clinton  administration veteran\u2019s role will likely roil progressives who view his  past work on the 2009 recovery as too favorable to big banks. That\u2019s  awkward for the Biden campaign at a time when it is trying to win the  trust of former supporters of Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\">Summers was the first name on the \u201cBiden do not reappoint list\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/prospect.org\/economy\/biden-do-not-reappoint-list-economic-policy-advisers\/\" itemprop=\"StoryLink\" itemscope=\"itemscope\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/prospect.org\/economy\/biden-do-not-reappoint-list-economic-policy-advisers\/\">published<\/a>  last month by the American Prospect\u2019s Robert Kuttner, who wrote that  Summers in 2009 \u201cnot only lowballed the necessary economic stimulus and  ended it prematurely, but he successfully fought for rescuing the  biggest banks rather than taking them into temporary receivership.\u201d<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Opposition from the left kept Summers from being nominated for Federal  Reserve Chairman by President Barack Obama in September 2013, when a  handful of Senate Democrats, including Warren, Sherrod Brown, Jon Tester  and Jeff Merkley, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2013-09-16\/summers-quit-fed-quest-after-democrats-spurned-obama-favorite\" itemprop=\"StoryLink\" itemscope=\"itemscope\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Summers's Withdrawal Said to Put Yellen as Fed Front-Runner (1)\" rel=\"noopener\">complained<\/a>  to the White House that he was too lax on financial regulation. Summers  withdrew his name from consideration after weeks of debate within the  White House about a possibly difficult confirmation fight. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I would note that Jon Tester is one of the most conservative Democrats in the Senate, as well as being from one of the most conservative states to have a Democratic Senator.<\/p>\n<p>This is a stupid and self-destructive, but hell, stupid and self-destructive seems to be what passes for&nbsp; Democratic Party branding, I guess.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I don&#8217;t know why centrist Democrats hate progressives more than they hate Donald Trump, but it is clear that they are willing to destroy themselves to troll progressives.
