Maxx and Ulta Beauty were among the chains to at least temporarily end the practice this week, denying influencers and media companies of the sales commissions they receive from posting links to products. These links have become a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessoffashion.com\/articles\/professional\/inside-the-multi-billion-dollar-online-product-recommendation-economy\">multi-billion dollar ecosystem<\/a>, serving as the main source of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessoffashion.com\/articles\/professional\/influencer-marketing-influencer-manager-assistant-careers\">income for many influencers<\/a> and a lucrative revenue stream for media brands.<\/p>\n<p>But with stores closed in most major cities, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessoffashion.com\/articles\/professional\/coronavirus-is-already-changing-how-people-shop-heres-how\">consumers cutting back their spending<\/a> on fashion, retailers are slashing costs. Millions of US workers have been laid off across all industries in the last two weeks, and some economists are predicting a global recession as bad or worse than the downturn that followed the 2008 financial crisis. Dillard\u2019s told its affiliate partners in an email that \u201cthe decision was made due to the impact of Covid-19 and the realignment of marketing strategy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now, influencers find themselves scrambling to figure out how to supplement that once-reliable source of income.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There have been a lot of changes driven by the Covid-19 pandemic, most have been destructive and negative.
