{"id":176779,"date":"2020-03-23T19:04:00","date_gmt":"2020-03-24T00:04:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2020\/03\/23\/this-is-a-shocker-not\/"},"modified":"2020-03-23T19:04:00","modified_gmt":"2020-03-24T00:04:00","slug":"this-is-a-shocker-not","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2020\/03\/23\/this-is-a-shocker-not\/","title":{"rendered":"This is a Shocker (Not)"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Donald Trump is talking about relaxing the Covid-19 restrictions for to boost the economy.<\/div>\n<p>It turns out that he started talking about this when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/before-trump-called-for-reevaluating-lockdowns-they-shuttered-six-of-his-top-earning-clubs-and-resorts\/2020\/03\/23\/88780374-6d38-11ea-aa80-c2470c6b2034_story.html\">his most lucrative properties started getting shut down<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">President Trump\u2019s private business has shut down six of its top seven revenue-producing clubs and hotels because of restrictions meant to slow the spread of the novel <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2020\/02\/28\/what-you-need-know-about-coronavirus\/?tid=lk_inline_manual_1&amp;itid=lk_inline_manual_1\">coronavirus<\/a>, potentially depriving Trump\u2019s company of millions of dollars in revenue.<\/p>\n<p>Those closures come as Trump is considering easing restrictions on movement sooner than federal public health experts recommend, in the name of reducing the virus\u2019s economic damage.<\/p>\n<p>In a tweet late Sunday, Trump said the measures could be lifted as soon as March 30. \u201cWE CANNOT LET THE CURE BE WORSE THAN THE PROBLEM ITSELF,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realdonaldtrump\/status\/1241935285916782593\">wrote<\/a> on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p>The company, which Trump says is run day-to-day by his sons Eric and Don Jr., has not said whether it would apply for a bailout of the hotel industry, if Congress created one.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has not, either. On Sunday, he was asked if his business would abstain from any federal bailout. He<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2020\/03\/23\/trump-deflects-questions-about-profiting-presidency-by-reverting-his-businessman-mythology\/?tid=lk_inline_manual_11&amp;itid=lk_inline_manual_11\"> did not give a clear answer<\/a>. \u201cEverything\u2019s changing, just so you understand, it\u2019s all changing,\u201d he said. \u201cBut I have no idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s business includes some commercial office buildings, which have long-term leases and should not be hurt as immediately by the virus. But he is also heavily invested in the hotel business, with 11 hotels around the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p>So far, the Trump Organization has closed hotels in Las Vegas; Doral, Fla.; Ireland; and Turnberry, Scotland \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/mar-a-lago-shuttered-as-trumps-clubs-and-restaurants-suffer-from-coronavirus-fallout\/2020\/03\/20\/dae785c0-6ad2-11ea-b313-df458622c2cc_story.html?tid=lk_inline_manual_18&amp;itid=lk_inline_manual_18\">as well as the Mar-a-Lago Club in Florida <\/a>and a golf club in Bedminster, N.J. Many of the clubs closed because they had to, under local orders. Others closed on their own, following strong guidance or recommendations from local officials.<\/p>\n<p>Those are six of Trump\u2019s top seven revenue-producing clubs and hotels, bringing in about $174 million total per year, according to Trump\u2019s most recent financial disclosures. That works out to $478,000 per day \u2014 revenue that is likely to be sharply reduced with the clubs shuttered. The disclosures provide self-reported revenue figures but not profits.<\/p>\n<p>Another of Trump\u2019s golf clubs, in Aberdeen, Scotland, appeared likely to shut down soon, after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2020\/03\/23\/coronavirus-latest-news\/?tid=lk_inline_manual_21&amp;itid=lk_inline_manual_21\">an order from British Prime Minister Boris Johnson that <\/a>\u201cnonessential\u201d shops should close and that people should leave home only to buy food, buy medicine or exercise alone.<\/p>\n<p>Even the Trump properties that remain open have been sharply affected: In Chicago, New York and Washington, the restaurants have closed, cutting off a key source of revenue.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p>If Trump did loosen restrictions on movement in the name of restarting the U.S. economy, that would probably increase the number of people staying in hotels, said Freitag, the hotel industry analyst from STR.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>Donald Trump raises self-dealing to heretofore undreamt levels in the United States.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>This man is literally going to infect millions of people in order to protect his bottom line.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Donald Trump is talking about relaxing the Covid-19 restrictions for to boost the economy.
