{"id":176851,"date":"2020-03-05T21:03:00","date_gmt":"2020-03-06T02:03:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2020\/03\/05\/not-a-surprise-5\/"},"modified":"2020-03-05T21:03:00","modified_gmt":"2020-03-06T02:03:00","slug":"not-a-surprise-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2020\/03\/05\/not-a-surprise-5\/","title":{"rendered":"Not a Surprise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It turns out that Naomi Seibt, the German girl put forward by the Heartland Institute as an answer to Greta Thunberg, is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2020\/feb\/28\/naomi-seibt-anti-greta-activist-white-nationalist-inspiration\">white supremacist asshole<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I did Nazi that coming:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">A young campaigner who has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/climate-environment\/2020\/02\/23\/meet-anti-greta-young-youtuber-campaigning-against-climate-alarmism\/\">hailed by climate sceptics<\/a> as the right\u2019s answer to Greta Thunberg has previously described a white nationalist who appeared to promote \u201cwhite genocide\u201d theories as one of her \u201cinspirations\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>Naomi Seibt, a 19-year-old from M\u00fcnster, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/germany\">Germany<\/a>, who styles herself as a \u201cclimate realist\u201d, has also had to deny she made remarks that could be seen as antisemitic following an attack on a synagogue last year. <\/p>\n<p>Seibt has been described as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/20200227-german-teen-naomi-seibt-the-darling-of-climate-change-deniers\">darling of climate change<\/a> deniers and spoke at a small side event of the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) \u2013 a high-profile annual meeting of rightwing activists in Washington that will also feature the US president, Donald Trump. <\/p>\n<p>\u2026\u2026\u2026 <\/p>\n<p>An examination of the young activist\u2019s YouTube videos and interviews has revealed that <b><span style=\"font-size: 100%; font-variant: small-caps;\">Seibt has shown support for an alt-right activist<\/span><\/b>. <\/p>\n<p>In a YouTube discussion last year that was highlighted in a report by the German broadcaster ZDF, Seibt discussed an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2019\/oct\/10\/halle-attack-homemade-guns-jammed-repeatedly-video-shows\">attack on a synagogue in Halle<\/a> that killed two people who were outside the temple, and <b><span style=\"font-size: 100%; font-variant: small-caps;\">said Jews were considered to be \u201cat the top\u201d of groups who were seen as being oppressed. \u201cOrdinary Germans\u201d, she said, were \u201cat the bottom\u201d. Muslims, she added, were somewhere in between<\/span><\/b>. <\/p>\n<p>\u2026\u2026\u2026 <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is clear that she is articulating \u2013 no matter how inarticulately \u2013 age-old tropes of Jewish power and white grievance: the idea that Jews are a privileged class and that white people are oppressed by them,\u201d said Imran Ahmed, the chief executive of the Center for Countering Digital Hate, who studied the remarks. <\/p>\n<p>\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p>In another YouTube interview describing her embrace of \u201cviews that were outside the mainstream\u201d, Seibt referred to the Canadian alt-right internet activist Stefan Molyneux as an \u201cinspiration\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Seibt has been hired by a US thinktank called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.desmogblog.com\/heartland-institute\">the Heartland Institute<\/a>, which has traditionally been financed by fossil fuel and coal companies and is known for pushing radical anti-science theories about the climate crisis.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So not a surprise.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It turns out that Naomi Seibt, the German girl put forward by the Heartland Institute as an answer to Greta Thunberg, is a white supremacist asshole.
