What ostensibly started as a tool for big-name brands to drive the <a href=\"https:\/\/business.twitter.com\/content\/dam\/business-twitter\/resources\/agency\/develop-strategies-with-twitter-products\/Twitter_Ads_Video_Playbook.pdf\">\u201creach\u201d and \u201cimpact\u201d<\/a> of whatever message they might be promoting, it\u2019s since devolved into another kind of marketing tool that\u2019s just kind of&#8230;. weird. Not weird in the <a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/senator-wyden-warns-facebooks-targeted-ads-a-sophistica-1838885440\">tracking-you-everywhere-you-go<\/a> kind of way, but weird, in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theringer.com\/tech\/2018\/11\/29\/18118029\/twitter-weird-promoted-tweets\">just plain<\/a> weird way.<\/p>\n<p>Not unlike the bonkers hallucinations reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/pittsburgh.cbslocal.com\/2019\/02\/25\/hospice-buffalo-death-dreams-study\/\">patients on death\u2019s door<\/a>, the spammy, click-baity, and sometimes downright disturbing promoted tweets cropping up onto people\u2019s feeds are symptomatic of Twitter\u2019s own ad platform rotting from the inside out. <\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a recent example: This week, freelance journalist Tyler Coates apparently had a grisly promo for an organ-buying service crop up onto his feed. <\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-lang=\"en\">\n<div dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\"><span style=\"color: blue;\">promoted tweet <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/NfxrpVBCpY\">pic.twitter.com\/NfxrpVBCpY<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u2014 Tyler Coates (@tylercoates) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tylercoates\/status\/1227713326446239751?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 12, 2020<\/a><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There is something profoundly broken in our economic system.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Twitter just took advertisements from a fake organ selling firm: Aside from pockets of overt racism, one of the more weirdly unpleasant corners of Twitter comes from its \u201cpromoted\u201d content.
