{"id":176957,"date":"2020-02-07T22:11:00","date_gmt":"2020-02-08T03:11:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2020\/02\/07\/gonna-leave-a-mark\/"},"modified":"2020-02-07T22:11:00","modified_gmt":"2020-02-08T03:11:00","slug":"gonna-leave-a-mark","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2020\/02\/07\/gonna-leave-a-mark\/","title":{"rendered":"Gonna Leave a Mark"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When the <i>Columbia Journalism Review<\/i> writes an article about your paper, it can frequently be uncomfortable.<\/p>\n<p>When the <i>CJR<\/i> title is, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cjr.org\/public_editor\/post-baron-sonmez-lowery-twitter.php\">The <i>Post<\/i>\u2019s Masthead Will Have to Accept That It Is Not God<\/a>, you know it is going to be an unpleasant read for the <i>WaPo<\/i> editorial staff.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The problem here is not one of technology. It is one of politics. The attempt of prestige newspapers like the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Post<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to cast themselves as perfect sentinels of objectivity standing outside  the tawdry world of political judgment is, as honest journalists have  long realized, absurd. And impossible. The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Post<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s  current social media policy forbids posting anything \u201cthat could  objectively be perceived as reflecting political, racial, sexist,  religious or other bias or favoritism.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: blue;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider the assumptions inherent in  such a standard. It posits, first, the existence of someone capable of  telling hundreds of journalists with hundreds of different sets of life  experiences covering a complex nation of 330 million citizens what  \u201cobjectively\u201d is political or racial bias. (Maybe God is up to that job,  but Marty Baron is not.) We see in practice that what is ruled to  violate this standard is a reporter noting a history of sexual assault  in a recently deceased celebrity, or a reporter saying that the Tea  Party was motivated by racism. Are these observations \u201cobjectively\u201d  evidence of some sort of \u201cbias?\u201d No. They are, instead, evidence that it  is a fool\u2019s errand for the management of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Post<\/span><\/i><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"color: blue;\"> to act as though they alone have insight into objective truth. <\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Oh, snap!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When the Columbia Journalism Review writes an article about your paper, it can frequently be uncomfortable.
