{"id":177137,"date":"2019-12-14T19:55:00","date_gmt":"2019-12-15T00:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2019\/12\/14\/signs-that-your-investment-might-be-a-scam\/"},"modified":"2019-12-14T19:55:00","modified_gmt":"2019-12-15T00:55:00","slug":"signs-that-your-investment-might-be-a-scam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2019\/12\/14\/signs-that-your-investment-might-be-a-scam\/","title":{"rendered":"Signs that Your Investment Might be a Scam\u2026\u2026\u2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>How about when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2019\/dec\/13\/cryptocurrency-exhumation-gerald-cotten-investors-canada\">investors are demanding an exhumation of the founder of the fund<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>It does seem to me that this might be an indicator that there are significant irregularities:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">Lawyers for customers of an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2019\/feb\/04\/quadrigacx-canada-cryptocurrency-exchange-locked-gerald-cotten\">insolvent cryptocurrency exchange<\/a> have asked police to exhume the body of the company\u2019s founder, amid efforts to recover about $190m in Bitcoin which were locked in an online black hole after his death. <\/p>\n<p>\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Citing \u201cdecomposition concerns\u201d, lawyers requested the exhumation be completed no later than spring 2020. <\/p>\n<p>\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Soon after his death, however, reports surfaced that nearly 80,000 users of QuadrigaCX \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/2019\/11\/the-strange-tale-of-quadriga-gerald-cotten\">at the time Canada\u2019s largest cryptocurrency exchange<\/a> \u2013 were unable to access funds totaling more $190m. <\/p>\n<p>Cotten was the only one with access to necessary permissions. While Robertson has possession of the laptop containing the necessary passwords, she remains locked out. <\/p>\n<p>\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Uncertainty about the missing funds has fueled speculation that Cotten may still be alive. In their letter to the RCMP the law firm underlined the \u201cneed for certainty around the question of whether Mr Cotten is in fact deceased\u201d. <\/p>\n<p>The accounting firm Ernst &amp; Young, tasked with auditing the company as it undergoes bankruptcy proceedings, <a href=\"https:\/\/documentcentre.eycan.com\/eycm_library\/Quadriga%20Fintech%20Solutions%20Corp\/English\/CCAA\/1.%20Monitor's%20Reports\/6.%20Fifth%20Report%20of%20the%20Monitor\/Fifth%20Report%20of%20the%20Monitor%20dated%20June%2019,%202019.PDF\">discovered numerous money-losing trades<\/a> executed by Cotten, using customers\u2019 funds. <\/p>\n<p>They also found a substantial amount of money was used to fund a lavish lifestyle for the couple, including the use of private jets and luxury vehicles. Ernst &amp; Young was able to recover $24m in cash and $9m in assets held by Robertson. <\/p>\n<p>Both Canada\u2019s tax authorities and the FBI are also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/resources\/victim-services\/seeking-victim-information\/seeking-victims-in-the-quadrigacx-investigation\">investigating the company<\/a>.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Anyone wanna guess the results of the exhumation?<\/p>\n<p>I would not place bets on either side. <br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\">   <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How about when investors are demanding an exhumation of the founder of the fund?
