{"id":177175,"date":"2019-12-02T20:35:00","date_gmt":"2019-12-03T01:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2019\/12\/02\/leaving-congress-to-spend-more-time-with-his-parole-officer\/"},"modified":"2019-12-02T20:35:00","modified_gmt":"2019-12-03T01:35:00","slug":"leaving-congress-to-spend-more-time-with-his-parole-officer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2019\/12\/02\/leaving-congress-to-spend-more-time-with-his-parole-officer\/","title":{"rendered":"Leaving Congress to Spend More Time with His Parole Officer"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>I am referring, of course, to Duncan Hunter, Jr., who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2019-12-02\/rep-duncan-hunter-to-abandon-not-guilty-plea-in-campaign-finance-scandal\">will plead guilty to embezzling campaign funds and resign from Congress<\/a>.<\/div>\n<p>Given that his district is pretty safely Republican, I believe that the Douglas Adams rule applies, and that he will be replaced by something even more bizarrely inexplicable:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">After years of denials and claims that he was the target of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/news\/politics\/sd-me-hunter-statement-20180822-story.html\">political witch hunt<\/a>, Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Alpine) is scheduled to appear in federal court Tuesday morning to plead guilty in a sweeping campaign finance investigation.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement was posted on the U.S. District Court docket Monday morning, then KUSI aired an interview with Hunter in which he said he would plead guilty to one of the 60 criminal charges against him. He suggested that he is likely to spend time in custody.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe plea I accepted is misuse of my own campaign funds, of which I pled guilty to only one count,\u201d Hunter told the station. \u201cI think it\u2019s important that people know that I did make mistakes. I did not properly monitor or account for my campaign money. I justify my plea with the understanding that I am responsible for my own campaign and my own campaign money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The reversal comes nearly six months after Hunter\u2019s wife and former campaign manager, Margaret Hunter, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/news\/watchdog\/story\/2019-06-13\/margaret-hunter-admits-guilt-in-campaign-finance-scandal\">admitted to<\/a> her role in a widespread scheme that saw the couple allegedly spend more than $200,000 in campaign donations on family expenses like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/news\/watchdog\/story\/2019-06-13\/margaret-hunter-admits-guilt-in-campaign-finance-scandal\">vacations<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/news\/watchdog\/sdut-hunter-groceries-2016may07-story.html\">gas, groceries<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/news\/watchdog\/sdut-hunter-school-lunch-2016jun15-story.html\">school lunches<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/news\/watchdog\/sdut-hunter-garage-door-2016apr19-story.html\">oral surgery<\/a>.
