{"id":177178,"date":"2019-12-02T19:50:00","date_gmt":"2019-12-03T00:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2019\/12\/02\/live-in-obedient-fear-citizen-7\/"},"modified":"2019-12-02T19:50:00","modified_gmt":"2019-12-03T00:50:00","slug":"live-in-obedient-fear-citizen-7","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2019\/12\/02\/live-in-obedient-fear-citizen-7\/","title":{"rendered":"Live in Obedient Fear, Citizen"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>The Owellian named Department of Homeland Security is looking to change regulations to <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2019\/12\/02\/homeland-security-face-recognition-airport-citizens\/\">require facial scans of US citizens at the border<\/a>:<\/div>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">Homeland Security wants to expand facial recognition checks for travelers arriving to and departing from the U.S. to also include citizens, which had previously been exempt from the mandatory checks. <\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reginfo.gov\/public\/do\/eAgendaViewRule?pubId=201910&amp;RIN=1651-AB22&amp;=biometric-collection-data-citizens\">a filing<\/a>, the department has proposed that all travelers, and not just foreign nationals or visitors, will have to complete a facial recognition check before they are allowed to enter the U.S., but also to leave the country. <\/p>\n<p>\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p>But although there may not always be a clear way to opt-out of facial recognition at the airport, U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents \u2014 also known as green card holders \u2014 have been <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2019\/05\/13\/americans-opt-out-facial-recognition-airport\/\">exempt<\/a> from these checks, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbp.gov\/travel\/biometrics\/biometric-exit-faqs\">existing rules<\/a> say. <\/p>\n<p>Now, the proposed rule change to include citizens has drawn ire from one of the largest civil liberties groups in the country. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cTime and again, the government told the public and members of Congress that U.S. citizens would not be required to submit to this intrusive surveillance technology as a condition of traveling,\u201d said Jay Stanley, a senior policy analyst at the <a href=\"https:\/\/crunchbase.com\/organization\/american-civil-liberties-union\">American Civil Liberties Union <\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Citing <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2019\/06\/10\/cbp-data-breach\/\">a data breach<\/a> of close to 100,000 license plate and traveler images in June, as well as concerns about a lack of sufficient safeguards to protect the data, Stanley said the government \u201ccannot be trusted\u201d with this technology and that lawmakers should intervene. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Our surveillance state is out of control.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Owellian named Department of Homeland Security is looking to change regulations to require facial scans of US citizens at the border: Homeland Security wants to expand facial recognition checks for travelers arriving to and departing from the U.S. to also include citizens, which had previously been exempt from the mandatory checks.
