{"id":177225,"date":"2019-11-18T20:48:00","date_gmt":"2019-11-19T01:48:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2019\/11\/18\/bill-russell-is-a-stand-up-guy\/"},"modified":"2019-11-18T20:48:00","modified_gmt":"2019-11-19T01:48:00","slug":"bill-russell-is-a-stand-up-guy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2019\/11\/18\/bill-russell-is-a-stand-up-guy\/","title":{"rendered":"Bill Russell is a Stand Up Guy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The great Boston Celtics center Bill Russell has refused to acknowledge his induction into the basketball Hall of Fame for decades.<\/p>\n<p>He&#8217;s always kept his reasons private, until now.<\/p>\n<p>He has now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theroot.com\/bill-russell-ends-44-year-basketball-hof-boycott-but-th-1839895796\">has finally accepted a HoF ring because the Hall of Fame has finally inducted the player who broke the color barrier in the NBA<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">Ask anyone who is the greatest basketball player of all time, and you\u2019ll surely get a diversity of opinions\u2014including Michael Jordan, Lebron James, Magic Johnson and that dude who played for your cousin\u2019s high school in 1987 whose jump shot was wet but he got shot in his layup leg running from the police his senior year in high school after he stole a black-and-white television from Radio Shack, so he never made it to the NBA. But if you ask who was the greatest man who played in the NBA, you\u2019ll only get one name:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">William Felton Russell.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">The <i>eleven-time<\/i> NBA champion (no, that\u2019s not a typo) is known as much for his willingness to stand up for what is right as he is for his five NBA MVP awards (no, that\u2019s not a typo). Bill Russell counseled <a href=\"https:\/\/theundefeated.com\/features\/the-cleveland-summit-muhammad-ali\/\">Muhammad Ali<\/a> and Jim Brown; fought for civil rights his entire career, and financially supported the movement as one of the NBA\u2019s biggest stars. He held Boston Celtic fans accountable for their racism and once convinced his entire organization to forfeit a game because a restaurant wouldn\u2019t serve black customers. Only one other human being (Buddy Jeanette) has won an NBA title as a player <i>while he was the team\u2019s head coach<\/i>.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Bill Russell did it twice.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">But, despite being inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1975, Russell never acknowledged the honor or accepted his Hall of Fame ring. When asked why he essentially boycotted the ceremony, Russell would only reply that he had his \u201cown personal reasons.\u201d Throughout his post-NBA career, he refrained from referring to himself as a \u201cHall-of-Famer\u201d and never explained why.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">On Thursday, Bill Russell finally accepted his Hall of Fame ring in a private ceremony at his home, but only after he confirmed that Chuck Cooper had been inducted into the Hall of Fame:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-lang=\"en\">\n<div dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\"><span style=\"color: blue;\">In a private ceremony w\/my wife &amp; close friends A.Mourning <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AnnMeyers?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@AnnMeyers<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BillWalton?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@billwalton<\/a> &amp; others I accepted my <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/HOF?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#HOF<\/a> ring. He only averaged <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20071010050157\/http:\/\/www.databasebasketball.com\/players\/playerpage.htm?ilkid=CoopeCh01\">6.7 points per game<\/a> throughout his career.
