{"id":177241,"date":"2019-11-15T19:46:00","date_gmt":"2019-11-16T00:46:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2019\/11\/15\/another-uber-setback\/"},"modified":"2019-11-15T19:46:00","modified_gmt":"2019-11-16T00:46:00","slug":"another-uber-setback","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2019\/11\/15\/another-uber-setback\/","title":{"rendered":"Another Uber Setback"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Now that governments are no longer terrified of Uber, much of the regulatory forbearance that has been essential to the success of their business is ending.<\/div>\n<p>Case in point, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/new-jersey-demands-uber-fork-over-nearly-650-million-in-unpaid-taxes-fines-11573836289?mod=hp_lista_pos4\">New Jersey is now demanding back taxes and fines in the amount of $650,000,000.00<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/quotes.wsj.com\/UBER\">Uber Technologies<\/a> Inc. has been hit with an almost $650 million bill in unpaid employment taxes and fines from New Jersey, marking another setback for the ride-sharing firm as it struggles to prevent its drivers from being classified as employees. <\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, the state\u2019s Department of Labor and Workforce Development demanded Uber and a subsidiary, Rasier LLC, hand over the amount for failing to pay employment taxes by, the state argues, misclassifying drivers as independent contractors. <\/p>\n<p>The Labor Department said in letters sent to the firms that they owe $523 million in unemployment and disability insurance taxes for 2014 through 2018. The state added $119 million in penalties and interest. <\/p>\n<p>\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p>New Jersey officials say that misclassifying employees isn\u2019t fair to workers. They also estimate that misclassification across the workforce costs the state\u2019s almost 250,000 employers an additional $300 per employee because of insufficient funding of the state\u2019s unemployment insurance trust fund.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is a company whose business plan was dependent on impunity for law breaking for their success, and now that regulators are no longer looking the other way, they are in a world of well-deserved hurt.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Now that governments are no longer terrified of Uber, much of the regulatory forbearance that has been essential to the success of their business is ending.
