{"id":177252,"date":"2019-11-12T19:26:00","date_gmt":"2019-11-13T00:26:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2019\/11\/12\/good-point-3\/"},"modified":"2019-11-12T19:26:00","modified_gmt":"2019-11-13T00:26:00","slug":"good-point-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2019\/11\/12\/good-point-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Good Point"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Over at the Gray Lady, Charles Blow makes a trenchant point about Mike Bloomberg, that he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/11\/10\/opinion\/michael-bloomberg.html\">ran the most racist New York City mayor&#8217;s office in modern memory<\/a>:<\/div>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\"> With his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/11\/08\/us\/politics\/michael-bloomberg-president.html?module=inline\">filing of paperwork on Friday<\/a> to put his name on the ballot for the Democratic primary in Alabama, the billionaire businessman and former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg inched closer to declaring a run for the Democratic nomination for president.<\/p>\n<p>According to The New York Times, his advisers say he hasn\u2019t made up his mind yet. But I have.<\/p>\n<p>Let me plant the stake now: No black person \u2014 or Hispanic person or ally of people of color \u2014 should ever even <i>consider<\/i> voting for Michael Bloomberg in the primary. His expansion of the notoriously racist stop-and-frisk program in New York, which swept up millions of innocent New Yorkers, primarily young black and Hispanic men, is a complete and nonnegotiable deal killer.<\/p>\n<p>Stop-and-frisk, pushed as a way to get guns and other contraband off the streets, became nothing short of a massive, enduring, city-sanctioned system of racial terror.<\/p>\n<p>This system of terror exploded under Bloomberg, with his full advocacy and support.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p>A federal judge ruled in 2013 that New York\u2019s stop-and-frisk tactics violated the constitutional rights of racial minorities, calling it a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/08\/13\/nyregion\/stop-and-frisk-practice-violated-rights-judge-rules.html?module=inline\">\u201cpolicy of indirect racial profiling.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Yet, a little over a month before that ruling, Bloomberg said on a radio show, \u201cI think we disproportionately stop whites too much and minorities too little.\u201d As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/2013\/06\/28\/bloomberg-police-minorities-stops\/2474261\/\">USA Today<\/a> pointed out at the time: \u201cAbout 5 million stops have been made during the past decade. Eighty-seven percent of those stopped in the last two years were black or Hispanic.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: blue;\">Not only has Bloomberg failed to express any regret for what he did, he has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/01\/22\/politics\/bloomberg-stop-and-frisk\/index.html\">continued<\/a> to defend it.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"border: 1px solid black; float: right; margin: 0px 10px; padding: 2px; text-align: center; width: 310px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/vWz6uw0.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" bordercolor=\"white\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/vWz6uw0.gif\" width=\"305\" \/><\/a><b><span style=\"font-size: 300%; font-variant: small-caps;\">BAM!<\/span><\/b><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"color: blue;\">It is worth noting that there is virtually no difference between Bloomberg cheerleading stop-and-frisk and Donald Trump musing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2016\/09\/donald-trump-stop-and-frisk-228486\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\">during the last election<\/a> about somehow instituting the program nationwide. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s not just that Mikey is a billionaire intent on preserving his privilege.
