{"id":177469,"date":"2019-09-11T17:42:00","date_gmt":"2019-09-11T22:42:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2019\/09\/11\/stay-classy-republicans\/"},"modified":"2019-09-11T17:42:00","modified_gmt":"2019-09-11T22:42:00","slug":"stay-classy-republicans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2019\/09\/11\/stay-classy-republicans\/","title":{"rendered":"Stay Classy, Republicans"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>North Carolina Republicans lacked the necessary votes to override Governor Roy Cooper&#8217;s veto of their budget, so they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2019\/09\/11\/north-carolina-republicans-overrode-budget-veto-while-democrats-were-ceremony\/\">held a surprise vote while Democrats were at a 911 commemoration ceremony<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What a revolting group of pissants:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">While most North Carolinians were remembering the lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001, the Republican leaders in the General Assembly took advantage of a half-empty House and voted to override the governor\u2019s budget veto Wednesday morning.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Gov. Roy Cooper (D) said in a news conference that House Republicans called for a \u201csurprise vote\u201d while he and House members were honoring first responders on the anniversary of 9\/11.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u201cRepublicans called a deceptive surprise override of my budget veto,\u201d Cooper said. \u201cUnfortunately, it\u2019s the people of North Carolina who lose.\u201d<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">House Minority Leader Darren Jackson (D) said he told his caucus members  that they did not need to be in attendance and that state Rep. David  Lewis (R), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncleg.gov\/Members\/Committees\/H\/389\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chairman of the Rules, Calendar and Operations Committee<\/a>, gave Jackson his word that there would be no votes, according to the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsobserver.com\/news\/politics-government\/article234962017.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> News &amp; Observer<\/a>.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Republicans were unable to override the veto for  about two months as long as Democrats were present in the chamber,  Cooper said. The General Assembly needs a three-fifths majority to  override a veto, which Republicans lack.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">The House is allowed to conduct business as long as at least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncleg.net\/Sessions\/2017\/Bills\/House%3C\/blockquote%3E\/PDF\/H114v6.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">61 of 120 members<\/a> are present.
