{"id":177498,"date":"2019-09-04T18:50:00","date_gmt":"2019-09-04T23:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2019\/09\/04\/the-ghost-of-judge-julius-hoffman\/"},"modified":"2019-09-04T18:50:00","modified_gmt":"2019-09-04T23:50:00","slug":"the-ghost-of-judge-julius-hoffman","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2019\/09\/04\/the-ghost-of-judge-julius-hoffman\/","title":{"rendered":"The Ghost of Judge Julius Hoffman"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It does not surprise me that whenever there are protests and there are two sides, the cops will be polite and solicitous to Klansmen, white supremacists, fascists, Nazis, and racist, and hostile and aggressive to their opponents.<\/p>\n<p>I have literally never heard of a demonstration in the United States where the cops do not favor the forces of hate and bigotry.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s baked into their culture.<\/p>\n<p>So the abusive police presence at the &#8220;straight pride&#8221; ralley in Boston is no surprise.<\/p>\n<p>What I would not expect, however, is that we would also find a judge so over the top in favor of the bigots that he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boston.com\/news\/local-news\/2019\/09\/04\/rachael-rollins-straight-pride-parade-protesters\">denied a request by prosecutors to dismiss charges against some of the people who were arrested<\/a>, and he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wgbh.org\/news\/local-news\/2019\/09\/04\/boston-judge-holds-defense-attorney-for-straight-pride-counter-protesters-in-contempt\">threw a defense attorney in jail for contempt of court<\/a> .<\/p>\n<p>Does it sound like the return of the judge from the Chicago 7 trial yet?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\"><b>Update<\/b>: Suffolk County District Attorney Rachael Rollins filed an emergency petition with the state Supreme Judicial Court on Wednesday regarding Boston Municipal Court Judge Richard Sinnott\u2019s actions, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/metro\/2019\/09\/04\/judge-cites-defense-lawyer-for-contempt-court-during-straight-pride-protester-arraignment\/keDbKCh31o9a79lqQ8Bv1N\/story.html\"><i>The Boston Globe<\/i> reports<\/a>. In it, her office argues that Sinnott \u201cignored the clear and unambiguous constraints placed on the judiciary by the separation of powers\u201d in not following through with prosecutors\u2019 intent to drop the charges against the nonviolent protesters. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe judge\u2019s interference with the district attorney\u2019s constitutional authority cannot stand,\u201d the petition reads. <\/p>\n<p>Rollins filed the petition on behalf of one of the nonviolent defendants, with the intention of it setting a precedent for the other similar cases, according to the newspaper. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe actions of Judge Richard Sinnott are unprecedented and outrageous,\u201d the district attorney <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DARollins\/status\/1169393627883343873\">wrote on Twitter<\/a>, linking to the Globe story on her petition.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p><i>Original story below<\/i>: <\/p>\n<p>Following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/metro\/2019\/08\/31\/counterprotesters-rally-across-city-from-straight-pride-parade-starting-point\/qFStqXFPcWoOWAaxkDyDfI\/story.html\">the clash between \u201cStraight Pride Parade\u201d protesters and police<\/a> in downtown Boston over the weekend, an unusual clash is now unfolding between prosecutors and a local judge handling the cases of those arrested during the event. <\/p>\n<p>Boston Municipal Court Judge Richard Sinnott refused to dismiss charges Tuesday against a number of nonviolent protesters arrested during the parade and ensuing counter-demonstration.
