{"id":177576,"date":"2019-08-13T19:45:00","date_gmt":"2019-08-14T00:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2019\/08\/13\/the-nra-doth-protest-too-much\/"},"modified":"2019-08-13T19:45:00","modified_gmt":"2019-08-14T00:45:00","slug":"the-nra-doth-protest-too-much","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2019\/08\/13\/the-nra-doth-protest-too-much\/","title":{"rendered":"The NRA Doth Protest Too Much"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Last week, I wrote about how <a href=\"http:\/\/40yrs.blogspot.com\/2019\/08\/nope-no-corruption-here.html\">the NRA was working to purchase a multimillion dollar estate for its executive VP Wayne LaPierre<\/a>.<\/div>\n<p>The NRA argued that it was their ad firm, and not them, that was attempting this blatant effort at self dealing.<\/p>\n<p>Well, the <i>Wall Street Journal<\/i> now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/check-for-dallas-mansion-raises-new-questions-about-nra-plans-11565626607\">has the $70,000 check from the National Rifle Association to a shell company that was to execute the purchase<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\"><span style=\"color: blue;\">In May 2018, the National Rifle Association sent a $70,000 check to an obscure Delaware entity called WBB Investments LLC, which had been incorporated a week earlier.<\/span><\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"color: blue;\"><span style=\"color: blue;\">The check, a copy of which was obtained by The <i>Wall Street Journal<\/i>, raises new questions about the NRA\u2019s attempts to explain a tangled transaction involving its then-outside advertising agency and an abortive plan to purchase a $6 million Dallas mansion for NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre. <\/span><\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"color: blue;\"><span style=\"color: blue;\">The advertising agency, Ackerman McQueen, recently turned over documents to the proposed house purchase to the New York attorney general\u2019s office, which is probing Mr. LaPierre\u2019s dealings with the agency as part of a broad investigation of the NRA.<\/span><\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"color: blue;\"><span style=\"color: blue;\">When <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/nra-chief-sought-help-of-groups-ad-agency-in-buying-5-million-mansion-11565145754?mod=article_inline\">the Journal broke the story last week<\/a>, the NRA initially said the plan to buy the mansion was hatched by Angus McQueen, the ad agency\u2019s late co-CEO, as a kind of safe house for Mr. LaPierre. The NRA chief had concerns about his security in the wake of the February 2018 mass shooting at a high school in Parkland, Fla.<\/span><\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"color: blue;\"><span style=\"color: blue;\">The NRA said the house was to be purchased by a company owned by senior Ackerman executives, and Mr. LaPierre shut down the transaction after discovering that the ad company intended to use NRA funds for the deal. \u201cNot a cent of NRA money was ultimately spent,\u201d the NRA said.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\"><span style=\"color: blue;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/B0h9cNF.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/B0h9cNF.jpg\" width=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"color: blue;\"><span style=\"color: blue;\"><i>An NRA check for $70,000 to an obscure Delaware entity called WBB Investments is the most-direct evidence to have emerged of the flow of money in the aborted mansion deal.<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: blue;\">Ackerman, for its part, says Mr. LaPierre had wanted the mansion, which it said was to be paid for by the NRA. According to Ackerman\u2019s version of events, Mr. LaPierre had asked Ackerman to help facilitate the deal, and an Ackerman lawyer set up WBB Investments to buy the house so the LaPierre connection wouldn\u2019t become public. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Mr. LaPierre and his wife, Susan, twice visited the house\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.compass.com\/listing\/1112-post-oak-place-westlake-tx-76262\/25293851665168161?mod=article_inline\">a 10,000-square-foot residence in a gated golf community<\/a>\u2014and were preparing to put down $70,000 in earnest money to make an offer, according to people familiar with this version of the transaction. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Enter the check, dated May 25, 2018, and drawn on an NRA account at <a href=\"https:\/\/quotes.wsj.com\/WFC\">Wells Fargo<\/a> . It is the most-direct evidence of the flow of money in the aborted deal to have emerged.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u201cIf there\u2019s a check from the NRA to an LLC, that doesn\u2019t seem consistent with a story that Ackerman was going to pay for it,\u201d said Elizabeth Kingsley, a Washington lawyer who specializes in nonprofit law. \u201cEven if it\u2019s just earnest money, the money is on the line and the check shows NRA money, not Ackerman funds.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Indeed.<\/p>\n<p>The NRA was laundering money for Wayne LaPierre&#8217;s personal benefit.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last week, I wrote about how the NRA was working to purchase a multimillion dollar estate for its executive VP Wayne LaPierre.
