{"id":177818,"date":"2019-06-01T18:27:00","date_gmt":"2019-06-01T23:27:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2019\/06\/01\/still-a-solution-looking-for-a-problem\/"},"modified":"2019-06-01T18:27:00","modified_gmt":"2019-06-01T23:27:00","slug":"still-a-solution-looking-for-a-problem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2019\/06\/01\/still-a-solution-looking-for-a-problem\/","title":{"rendered":"Still a Solution Looking for a Problem"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bundesbank and Deutsche Boerse finished a test of blockchain for settling financial transactions, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-05-29\/blockchain-settlement-was-slow-costly-in-trial-weidmann-says\">it did not go well<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">A trial project using blockchain to transfer and settle securities and cash proved more costly and less speedy than the traditional way, Germany\u2019s central bank president said.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">The experiment, launched by the Bundesbank together with Deutsche Boerse in 2016, concluded late last year that the prototype \u201cin principle fulfilled all basic regulatory features for financial transactions.\u201d Yet while advocates of distributed ledger technology say it has the potential to be cheaper and faster than current settlement mechanisms, Jens Weidmann said the Bundesbank project did not bear those out.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u201cThe blockchain solutions did not fare better in every way: the process took a bit longer and resulted in relatively high computational costs,\u201d Weidmann said in Frankfurt on Wednesday. \u201cSimilar experiences have been made elsewhere in the financial sector.
