{"id":177826,"date":"2019-05-30T18:29:00","date_gmt":"2019-05-30T23:29:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2019\/05\/30\/i-knew-that-the-name-sununu-was-involved\/"},"modified":"2019-05-30T18:29:00","modified_gmt":"2019-05-30T23:29:00","slug":"i-knew-that-the-name-sununu-was-involved","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2019\/05\/30\/i-knew-that-the-name-sununu-was-involved\/","title":{"rendered":"I Knew That the Name &#8220;Sununu&#8221; Was Involved"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New Hampshire just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national\/new-hampshire-will-abandon-death-penalty-after-lawmakers-override-governor\/2019\/05\/30\/d0bdec8e-824c-11e9-bce7-40b4105f7ca0_story.html\">abolished the death penalty<\/a>.<br \/>In order to do so, they had to override the veto from the Governor.<\/p>\n<p>I did not know who the Governor was, but I knew his last name had to be Sununu, because whenever some Republican in New Hampshire does something Reagan type psychotic, you know that a Sununu had to be involved:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">Lawmakers in New Hampshire voted Thursday to abolish the death penalty, overriding a veto from the state\u2019s Republican governor and making it the 21st state to abandon capital punishment.<\/p>\n<p>The vote by the New Hampshire Senate capped months of uncertainty about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national\/new-hampshire-after-failed-attempts-looks-poised-to-abolish-the-death-penalty\/2019\/04\/11\/70f6f47a-5c7d-11e9-9625-01d48d50ef75_story.html?utm_term=.99a5f66363f8\">what would happen to capital punishment in the state<\/a>, the last in New England to still have the death penalty.<\/p>\n<p>\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Lawmakers in New Hampshire had tried to abolish the death penalty before but narrowly failed, running headlong into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.concordmonitor.com\/Veto-override-of-death-penalty-dies-in-NH-Senate-20151290\">gubernatorial<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.nytimes.com\/www.nytimes.com\/library\/national\/052000nh-deathpenalty.html\">vetoes<\/a> and, in 2014, falling short by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/post-nation\/wp\/2014\/04\/17\/new-hampshire-wont-repeal-the-death-penalty\/?utm_term=.1f2889153622\">a single vote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>After <b><span style=\"font-size: 100%; font-variant: small-caps;\">Gov. Chris Sununu<\/span><\/b> (R) vetoed a bill last year abolishing the death penalty, lawmakers passed another measure this year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national\/new-hampshire-after-failed-attempts-looks-poised-to-abolish-the-death-penalty\/2019\/04\/11\/70f6f47a-5c7d-11e9-9625-01d48d50ef75_story.html?utm_term=.99a5f66363f8\">with enough support to withstand a veto<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This <a href=\"http:\/\/gencourt.state.nh.us\/bill_status\/billText.aspx?sy=2019&amp;id=187&amp;txtFormat=html\">bill<\/a> \u201cchanges the penalty for capital murder to life imprisonment without the possibility for parole,\u201d stripping away the possibility of a death sentence for such crimes.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Political dynasties are truly toxic.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New Hampshire just abolished the death penalty.In order to do so, they had to override the veto from the Governor.
