{"id":177865,"date":"2019-05-19T18:25:00","date_gmt":"2019-05-19T23:25:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2019\/05\/19\/a-good-start-6\/"},"modified":"2019-05-19T18:25:00","modified_gmt":"2019-05-19T23:25:00","slug":"a-good-start-6","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2019\/05\/19\/a-good-start-6\/","title":{"rendered":"A Good Start"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The first Republican member of Congress has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-news\/republican-congressman-breaks-ranks-declares-trump-committed-impeachable-conduct-837215\/\">come out for impeaching Donald Trump<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">Republican Congressman Justin Amash has broken with the Republican Party line to declare that President Trump has \u201cengaged in impeachable conduct.\u201d He also accuses Attorney General William Barr of attempting \u201cto mislead the public about Special Counsel Robert Mueller\u2019s analysis and findings.\u201d President Trump has responded calling Amash a \u201clightweight\u201d and a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/politics-news\/trump-tweets-justin-amash-837276\/\">loser<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Amash, who represents a Michigan district anchored by Grand Rapids, leans libertarian in his political orientation. He is the first prominent GOP officeholder to suggest that Trump\u2019s efforts to obstruct justice and undermine the rule of law merit his removal from office. Indeed, Amash\u2019s call for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/impeachment\/\">impeachment<\/a> puts him out ahead of Democratic Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresident Trump engaged in specific actions and a pattern of behavior that meet the threshold for impeachment,\u201d Amash <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/justinamash\/status\/1129831622868635649\">writes<\/a>. The congressman used a Twitter thread Saturday to broadcast his views, \u201conly after having read Mueller\u2019s redacted report carefully and completely, having read or watched pertinent statements and testimony, and having discussed this matter with my staff.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-lang=\"en\">\n<div dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\"><span style=\"color: blue;\">Here are my principal conclusions:<br \/>1. Attorney General Barr has deliberately misrepresented Mueller\u2019s report.<br \/>2. President Trump has engaged in impeachable conduct.<br \/>3. Partisanship has eroded our system of checks and balances.<br \/>4.
