Bill Gates hates Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s tax plan<\/a>, to which the obvious rejoinder is, “Well, he would say that, wouldn’t he?”<\/div>\n

Bill Gates says he\u2019s fine with the idea of higher taxes for the rich, but plans like the one being championed by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, which target the top income brackets, are too extreme\u2014and could encourage the wealthy to hide their money in offshore accounts. <\/p>\n

Gates, in an interview with The Verge<\/a>, didn\u2019t mention Ocasio-Cortez<\/a> or her well-publicized tax proposal directly by name, but his focus was clear. While the Microsoft<\/a> co-founder and world\u2019s second richest man agreed the U.S. could be \u201cmore progressive,\u201d he downplayed \u201cextreme\u201d proposals, such as the freshman representative\u2019s plan to raise the top tax rate from 37% to 70%<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\u201cI believe U.S. tax rates can be more progressive. Now, you finally have some politicians who are so extreme that I\u2019d say, \u2018No, that\u2019s even beyond,’\u201d Gates<\/a> said. \u201cYou do start to create tax dodging and disincentives, and an incentive to have the income show up in other countries and things. But we can be more progressive without really threatening income generation\u2014what you have left to decide how to spread around.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
