{"id":177947,"date":"2019-04-23T18:55:00","date_gmt":"2019-04-23T23:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2019\/04\/23\/so-the-trump-administration-is-pro-rape-as-a-weapon-of-war\/"},"modified":"2019-04-23T18:55:00","modified_gmt":"2019-04-23T23:55:00","slug":"so-the-trump-administration-is-pro-rape-as-a-weapon-of-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2019\/04\/23\/so-the-trump-administration-is-pro-rape-as-a-weapon-of-war\/","title":{"rendered":"So, the Trump Administration is Pro Rape as a Weapon of War"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>The US <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-war-rape-usa\/un-caves-to-veto-threat-by-anti-abortion-us-over-rape-in-war-help-idUSKCN1RZ27T\">forced changes to the resolution which basically eliminates any meaningful care to the victims or any prosecution for the rapists<\/a>.<\/div>\n<p>It appears that the whole, &#8220;Shining city upon the hill,&#8221; thing is now inoperative:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">A German-drafted resolution was adopted after a reference was cut referring to the need for U.N. bodies and donors to give timely \u201csexual and reproductive health\u201d assistance to survivors of sexual violence in conflict. <\/p>\n<p>The U.S. veto threat was the latest in a string of policy reversals that some U.N. diplomats say has been driven by U.S. Vice President Mike Pence, a conservative Christian who staunchly opposes abortion rights. <\/p>\n<p>\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Acting U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Jonathan Cohen did not speak after the council vote. <\/p>\n<p>After the vote French U.N. Ambassador Francois Delattre told the 15-member body: \u201cIt is intolerable and incomprehensible that the Security Council is incapable of acknowledging that women and girls who suffered from sexual violence in conflict &#8211; and who obviously didn\u2019t choose to become pregnant &#8211; should have the right to terminate their pregnancy.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The language promoting sexual and reproductive health is long-agreed internationally, including in resolutions adopted by the Security Council in 2009 and 2013 and several resolutions adopted annually by the 193-member General Assembly. <\/p>\n<p>The text adopted on Tuesday simply reaffirms the council\u2019s commitment to the 2009 and 2013 resolutions. A reference to the work of the International Criminal Court in fighting the most serious crimes against women and girls was also watered-down to win over Washington, which is not a member of the institution. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is beyond contempt.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The US forced changes to the resolution which basically eliminates any meaningful care to the victims or any prosecution for the rapists.
