{"id":178033,"date":"2019-03-26T18:03:00","date_gmt":"2019-03-26T23:03:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2019\/03\/26\/boeings-problems-metastasize\/"},"modified":"2019-03-26T18:03:00","modified_gmt":"2019-03-26T23:03:00","slug":"boeings-problems-metastasize","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2019\/03\/26\/boeings-problems-metastasize\/","title":{"rendered":"Boeing&#8217;s Problems Metastasize"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>It looks like <a href=\"https:\/\/aviationweek.com\/defense\/boeing-s-767-tankers-also-use-augmented-pitch-system\">Boeing\u2019s 767 tankers (KC-46A) also use the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS)<\/a>.<\/div>\n<p>I am sure that the operators of aircraft are going over their procedures and training as we speak:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/awin.aviationweek.com\/OrganizationProfiles.aspx?orgId=12083\">Boeing<\/a>\u2019s 767-based tankers use a version of the pitch augmentation system that grounded the 737 Max 8 fleet, the manufacturer and U.S. Air Force officials say.  <\/p>\n<p> The disclosure provides a new data point in the unfolding story of how Boeing installed the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS) on the narrowbody airliner fleet.  <\/p>\n<p> Both the <a href=\"http:\/\/awin.aviationweek.com\/ProgramProfileDetails.aspx?pgId=1136&amp;pgName=Boeing+767\">KC-767<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/awin.aviationweek.com\/ProgramProfileDetails.aspx?pgId=1104&amp;pgName=Boeing+KC-46A\">KC-46<\/a> fleets delivered to air forces in Italy, Japan and the U.S. rely on the MCAS to adjust for pitch trim changes during refueling operations.  <\/p>\n<p>\u2026\u2026\u2026 <\/p>\n<p> By 2011, Boeing had already delivered KC-767s to Italy and Japan fitted with the first version of MCAS. The use of the system then spread as Boeing won the Air Force\u2019s KC-46 contract in February and launched the 737 Max 8 in August. \u2026\u2026\u2026<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Air Force has launched a review of flight procedures for the KC-46, a spokeswoman says.  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe <a href=\"http:\/\/awin.aviationweek.com\/OrganizationProfiles.aspx?orgId=21170\">USAF<\/a> does not fly the models of aircraft involved in the recent accidents, but we are taking this opportunity to exercise due diligence by reviewing our procedures and training as part of our normal and ongoing review process,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Oops. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It looks like Boeing\u2019s 767 tankers (KC-46A) also use the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS).
