{"id":178077,"date":"2019-03-13T21:29:00","date_gmt":"2019-03-14T02:29:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2019\/03\/13\/the-scum-of-the-earth-no-this-is-not-comcast-edition\/"},"modified":"2019-03-13T21:29:00","modified_gmt":"2019-03-14T02:29:00","slug":"the-scum-of-the-earth-no-this-is-not-comcast-edition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2019\/03\/13\/the-scum-of-the-earth-no-this-is-not-comcast-edition\/","title":{"rendered":"The Scum of the Earth: No, This Is Not Comcast Edition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As soon as a particularly gullible judges signed off in its merger with Time Warner,  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publicknowledge.org\/news-blog\/blogs\/att-raises-prices-after-merger-approval-proves-doj-was-right-to-sue\">AT&amp;T raised its prices<\/a>,  the exact opposite of what it claimed:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">In light of AT&amp;T&#8217;s decision to <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/information-technology\/2019\/03\/att-raises-directv-now-price-again-after-promising-lower-post-merger-bills\/\">raise<\/a> the prices on DirecTV Now subscribers by $10\/month, and to drop channels like MTV, Comedy Central, BET, and BBC America (while adding more AT&amp;T-owned content to the bundle), it\u2019s worth reviewing some of what the telecom giant claimed during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publicknowledge.org\/press-release\/public-knowledge-disappointed-by-dc-circuit-allowing-att-time-warner-merger-decision-to-stand\">recent trial<\/a> over its merger with Time Warner:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">[C]onsumer prices will not go up. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Modern antitrust law recognizes that mergers between suppliers, such as Time Warner, and distributors, such as AT&amp;T, almost always create efficiencies and synergies that lead to lower consumer prices and greater innovation. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Vertical integration raises antitrust concerns only in the rare case where the government can prove that the merger will hobble rivals\u2019 ability to check the merged firm\u2019s pricing conduct, thereby allowing the merged firm to raise its own prices above competitive levels. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">[T]his merger is likely to enhance competition substantially, because it will enable the merged company to reduce prices. <\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: blue;\"><\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\">You can read more for yourself <a href=\"http:\/\/about.att.com\/content\/dam\/snrdocs\/time_warner_pre_trial_brief.pdf\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.dcd.191339\/gov.uscourts.dcd.191339.121.0_1.pdf\">here<\/a>.
