{"id":178336,"date":"2019-01-01T20:07:00","date_gmt":"2019-01-02T01:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2019\/01\/01\/today-in-unclear-headlines\/"},"modified":"2019-01-01T20:07:00","modified_gmt":"2019-01-02T01:07:00","slug":"today-in-unclear-headlines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2019\/01\/01\/today-in-unclear-headlines\/","title":{"rendered":"Today in Unclear Headlines"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>In. the publication <i>Deutsche Welle<\/i>, they headline a story as,&nbsp; &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/germany-mulls-introducing-mosque-tax-for-muslims\/a-46866041\">Germany mulls introducing \u2032mosque tax\u2032 for Muslims<\/a>,&#8221; which makes it look like one of the increasingly bigoted steps against Muslims in Europe.<\/div>\n<p>In reality, it constitutes an official recognition, and state subsidy being extended to the religion:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\"> Lawmakers from Germany&#8217;s grand coalition government said on Wednesday that they were considering introducing a &#8220;mosque tax&#8221; for German Muslims, similar to the church taxes that German Christians pay. <\/p>\n<p>Thorsten Frei, a member of Chancellor Angela Merkel&#8217;s Christian Democrats (CDU) told Die Welt daily that a mosque tax was &#8220;an important step&#8221; that would allow &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/german-islam-conference-reconvenes-search-for-german-islam\/a-46479656\">Islam in Germany<\/a> to emancipate itself from foreign states.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>In Germany, church taxes are collected from practicing Catholics and Protestants <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/6-facts-about-catholic-and-protestant-influence-in-germany\/a-43081215\">in order to fund church activities<\/a>. They are collected by the state and then transferred to religious authorities.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The justification is that this would reduce the dependence of the German Muslim community on the largess of the House of Saud.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">In the absence of a similar tax,  mosques in Germany are reliant upon donations, raising concerns about  possible financing by foreign organizations and governments, which has  sometimes prompted questions about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/salafism-in-germany-what-you-need-to-know\/a-45949326\">the promotion of fundamentalist ideologies<\/a>.
