{"id":178370,"date":"2018-12-20T20:48:00","date_gmt":"2018-12-21T01:48:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2018\/12\/20\/oh-the-horror\/"},"modified":"2018-12-20T20:48:00","modified_gmt":"2018-12-21T01:48:00","slug":"oh-the-horror","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2018\/12\/20\/oh-the-horror\/","title":{"rendered":"Oh, the Horror!!!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The powers that be in the UK are freaking out over a proposal to <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2018\/12\/19\/brexit-migrant-salary-cap-devastating-nhs-schools-experts-warn-8266041\/\">set a minimum wage of \u00a330,000 for immigrants admitted as &#8220;Highly Skilled&#8221;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>By way of perspective, at the current exchange rate, that translates is about $38,000 a year, or a bit over $18\/hour, or about 3 bucks more than Bernie&#8217;s proposed minimum wage here in the US.<\/p>\n<p>Econ 101:  if you pay a decent wage, they will come:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">Proposals for a minimum annual wage could see the UK without tens of thousands of doctors, nurses and teachers. <\/p>\n<p>Industry leaders have stressed \u2018high skills do not equal high pay\u2019 as the government seeks to curb immigration after Brexit.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: blue;\">Mr Javid confirmed the Government would be scrapping the current 20,700 annual cap on \u2018highly skilled migrants.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>It will now set a minimum salary for workers applying for five-year visas and they would need to be sponsored by a company.<\/p>\n<p>The Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) have recommended a \u00a330,000 threshold.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: blue;\">The starting salary for nurses, midwives and paramedics is \u00a323,000.
