{"id":178492,"date":"2018-11-12T23:08:00","date_gmt":"2018-11-13T04:08:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2018\/11\/12\/and-mccains-seat-goes-blue\/"},"modified":"2018-11-12T23:08:00","modified_gmt":"2018-11-13T04:08:00","slug":"and-mccains-seat-goes-blue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2018\/11\/12\/and-mccains-seat-goes-blue\/","title":{"rendered":"And McCain&#8217;s Seat Goes Blue"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Democrat Kyrsten Sinema has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/11\/12\/us\/kyrsten-sinema-arizona-senator.html\">officially been declared the victor of the Senate race in Arizona<\/a>, as her opponent Republican Martha McSally:<\/div>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">Representative Kyrsten Sinema, a Democrat and former social worker, scored a groundbreaking victory in the race for a Senate seat in Arizona, defeating her Republican opponent after waging a campaign in which she embraced solidly centrist positions.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Sinema\u2019s victory over Martha McSally, a Republican congresswoman and former Air Force pilot, marks the first Democratic triumph since <a href=\"https:\/\/kjzz.org\/content\/598219\/when-was-last-time-democrat-won-us-senate-seat-arizona\">1976<\/a> in a battle for an open Senate seat in Arizona. Ms. Sinema takes the seat being vacated by Jeff Flake, a Republican who is leaving the Senate after repeated clashes with President Trump.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Sinema\u2019s victory guarantees the Democrats at least 47 Senate seats.
