{"id":178516,"date":"2018-11-06T18:49:00","date_gmt":"2018-11-06T23:49:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2018\/11\/06\/the-joy-of-reading-a-bad-review\/"},"modified":"2018-11-06T18:49:00","modified_gmt":"2018-11-06T23:49:00","slug":"the-joy-of-reading-a-bad-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2018\/11\/06\/the-joy-of-reading-a-bad-review\/","title":{"rendered":"The Joy of Reading a Bad Review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have only a passing knowledge of the Amazon TV show <i>Transparent<\/i>, and even less knowledge of its showrunner, Jill Soloway, still, when I came across <a href=\"https:\/\/www.affidavit.art\/articles\/no-one-wants-it\">this review of her memoir, <i>She Wants It<\/i>, I realized that I had stumbled on a gem<\/a>, one one that might make Rex Reed, master of the snarky review gasp in awe.<\/p>\n<p>Also, unlike Reed, Andrea Long Chu actually gets into the weeds of the book, and not how Soloway looks, or dresses, etc., which to my mind puts her a pretty big step above Reed.<\/p>\n<p>She demolishes the recollections of a narcissistic asshole on their own terms:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">As a lightweight behind-the-scenes look at a critically acclaimed television series, Jill Soloway\u2019s new memoir <i>She Wants It: Desire, Power, and Toppling the Patriarchy<\/i> is just south of worth purchasing at the airport. As a book about desire, power, or toppling the patriarchy, it is incompetent, defensive, and astonishingly clueless. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span> <span style=\"color: blue;\">This is a story about someone who responds to criticisms of her TV show by taking \u201ca glamping writers\u2019 retreat\u201d to El Capitan: \u201cWe had a shaman come. She did magic incantations as we lay on the floor of a yurt.\u201d It is an unwitting portrait of a rich Los Angeles creative type with a child\u2019s knack for exploiting the sympathies of others, a person whose deep fear of doing the wrong thing was regularly outmatched by an even deeper distaste for doing the right thing. <b><span style=\"font-size: 100%; font-variant: small-caps;\">The nicest thing that can be said of this oblivious, self-absorbed, unimportant book is that it proves, once and for all, that trans people are fully, regrettably human.<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Those are the first two paragraphs, and it goes on to skewer Peter Thiel (who I should note is  <a href=\"http:\/\/40yrs.blogspot.com\/search?q=thiel+vampire&amp;max-results=20&amp;by-date=true\">literally a vampire who wants to use the blood of the young to extend his lifespan<\/a>) in only 7 words, along with lambasting former <i>Transparent<\/i> star Jeffrey Tambour, Louie C.K., and Lena Dunham<\/p>\n<p>Still she conclusively shows, with Soloway&#8217;s own words, that they are not as much of a self absorbed asshole as Soloway is.<\/p>\n<p>This is beautiful, and I know two thing for sure:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>I never want to be on the bad side of  Andrea Long Chu.<\/li>\n<li>If I ever need a speech writer, I want her.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;There are tears of joy pouring down my face.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have only a passing knowledge of the Amazon TV show Transparent, and even less knowledge of its showrunner, Jill Soloway, still, when I came across this review of her memoir, She Wants It, I realized that I had stumbled on a gem, one one that might make Rex Reed, master of the snarky review &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[],"tags":[464,385,528,390],"class_list":["post-178516","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","tag-good-writing","tag-media","tag-people-i-do-not-want-to-piss-off","tag-snark"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/178516"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=178516"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/178516\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=178516"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=178516"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=178516"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
