{"id":178529,"date":"2018-11-03T22:31:00","date_gmt":"2018-11-04T03:31:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2018\/11\/03\/f-zuck-4\/"},"modified":"2018-11-03T22:31:00","modified_gmt":"2018-11-04T03:31:00","slug":"f-zuck-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2018\/11\/03\/f-zuck-4\/","title":{"rendered":"F%$# Zuck"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Yet again, the rocks are turned over at Facebook, and so now we know that <a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2018\/11\/02\/facebook-ads-white-supremacy-pittsburgh-shooting\/\">gave advertisers specific access to white supremacists<\/a>: <\/div>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">Apparently fueled by anti-Semitism and the bogus narrative that outside forces are scheming to exterminate the white race, Robert Bowers murdered 11 Jewish congregants as they gathered inside their Pittsburgh synagogue, federal prosecutors allege. But despite long-running international efforts to debunk the idea of a \u201cwhite genocide,\u201d Facebook was still selling advertisers the ability to market to those with an interest in that myth just days after the bloodshed. <\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, The Intercept was able to select \u201cwhite genocide conspiracy theory\u201d as a pre-defined \u201cdetailed targeting\u201d criterion on the social network to promote two articles to an interest group that Facebook pegged at 168,000 users large and defined as \u201cpeople who have expressed an interest or like pages related to White genocide conspiracy theory.\u201d The paid promotion was approved by Facebook\u2019s advertising wing. After we contacted the company for comment, Facebook promptly deleted the targeting category, apologized, and said it should have never existed in the first place. <\/p>\n<p>Our reporting technique was the same as one used by the investigative news outlet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/facebook-enabled-advertisers-to-reach-jew-haters\">ProPublica<\/a> to report, just over one year ago, that in addition to soccer dads and Ariana Grande fans, \u201cthe world\u2019s largest social network enabled advertisers to direct their pitches to the news feeds of almost 2,300 people who expressed interest in the topics of \u2018Jew hater,\u2019 \u2018How to burn jews,\u2019 or, \u2018History of \u201cwhy jews ruin the world.\u201d\u2019\u201d The report exposed how little Facebook was doing to vet marketers, who pay the company to leverage personal information and inclinations in order to gain users\u2019 attention \u2014 and who provide the foundation for its entire business model.
