{"id":178534,"date":"2018-11-01T19:19:00","date_gmt":"2018-11-02T00:19:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2018\/11\/01\/kamov-advanced-helo\/"},"modified":"2018-11-01T19:19:00","modified_gmt":"2018-11-02T00:19:00","slug":"kamov-advanced-helo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2018\/11\/01\/kamov-advanced-helo\/","title":{"rendered":"Kamov Advanced Helo"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"border: 1px solid black; float: right; margin: 0px 10px; padding: 5px; text-align: center; width: 360px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/I1umJ5p.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" bordercolor=\"white\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/I1umJ5p.jpg\" width=\"350\" \/><\/a><br \/><i>Looks a lot like the S-79<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/e4G9TGE.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/e4G9TGE.jpg\" width=\"350\" \/><\/a><br \/>Sikorsky S-79<\/i><\/div>\n<p>Kamov, which has been the leading producer of coaxial rotor helicopters for decades, is <a href=\"http:\/\/aviationweek.com\/defense\/leaked-images-show-kamov-s-advanced-combat-helicopter\">proposing an advanced helicopter that bears a strong similarity to the Sikorski advancing blade helicopter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What is notable is that the two rotors are further apart than those of the S-79, it has wings, (and canards) and the propulsor is a turbofan rather than a propeller.<\/p>\n<p>First, it&#8217;s pretty clear from this that the rotors are probably not as stiff,&nbsp; and that the controls are less sophisticated, requiring more space between the two rotor disks to avoid the blades striking each other.<\/p>\n<p>The wings, and the turbofan propulsion, imply that it is designed for a much higher speed, probably at the expense of range, noise, and low speed accelleration<\/p>\n<p>That being said, I am profoundly dubious of their claim of a top speed of 700 km\/h (440 mph\/370 kts) for any rotorcraft:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">Pictures of a <a href=\"http:\/\/awin.aviationweek.com\/OrganizationProfiles.aspx?orgId=40440\">Kamov<\/a> design for an advanced attack helicopter have appeared on a Russian website. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">The images appear to have been leaked amid competition between the Kamov and <a href=\"http:\/\/awin.aviationweek.com\/OrganizationProfiles.aspx?orgId=40437\">Mil<\/a> Moscow Helicopter design bureaus within <a href=\"http:\/\/awin.aviationweek.com\/OrganizationProfiles.aspx?orgId=212956\">Russian Helicopters<\/a> to develop the country\u2019s future high-speed combat helicopter, called SBV. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Russian Helicopters announced at the Army 2017 forum in Moscow last September that it had signed a two-year contract with the Russian defense ministry to refine concepts for a high-speed attack helicopter, with both Kamov and Mil working on designs.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">The leaked photographs show Kamov General Designer Sergei Mikheyev  presenting the bureau\u2019s concept, a winged coaxial-rotor, twin-turbofan  compound helicopter reportedly capable of up to 700 kph (380 kt.) This  compares with a speed of more than 400 kph claimed for Mil\u2019s  single-main-rotor design.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">Propulsion is provided by what appear to be a pair of turbofans mounted in the aft fuselage and driving the rotor gearbox via a pair of shafts that project forward from the engines\u2014an arrangement reminiscent of the shaft-driven lift fan in the <a href=\"http:\/\/awin.aviationweek.com\/OrganizationProfiles.aspx?orgId=27191\">Lockheed Martin<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/awin.aviationweek.com\/ProgramProfileDetails.aspx?pgId=613&amp;pgName=Lockheed+Martin+F-35+JSF\">F-35B<\/a>. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span><span style=\"color: blue;\">The engines likely direct most of their power forward to shaft-drive the rotors for takeoff, hover and low-speed maneuvers, then shift more of the power to thrust as forward speed increases.
