{"id":178667,"date":"2018-09-26T18:42:00","date_gmt":"2018-09-26T23:42:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2018\/09\/26\/live-in-obedient-fear-citizen-19\/"},"modified":"2018-09-26T18:42:00","modified_gmt":"2018-09-26T23:42:00","slug":"live-in-obedient-fear-citizen-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2018\/09\/26\/live-in-obedient-fear-citizen-19\/","title":{"rendered":"Live in Obedient Fear, Citizen!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It appears that, in violation of California law, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/blog\/criminal-law-reform\/reforming-police-practices\/when-police-use-disappearing-message-apps-its\">police are using disappearing message apps so that there will be no proper record of their misdeeds<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">In a disturbing trend, government officials and police departments have been thwarting public oversight by using communications apps that automatically delete messages.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span> <span style=\"color: blue;\">The latest example comes from Southern California, where an investigation by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/local\/lanow\/la-me-ln-long-beach-police-tigertext-20180918-story.html\">Al Jazeera<\/a> and the ACLU of Southern California revealed last week that the Long Beach Police Department was using an app called TigerText to send self-erasing messages. The department\u2019s effort to subvert transparency appears to have been intentional: Supervisors were instructing officers to use the app whenever they wanted to keep potentially damaging information secret \u2014 including in cases of police killings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: blue;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/66tnT6N.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/66tnT6N.jpg\" width=\"475\" \/><\/a><\/span><br \/><span style=\"color: blue;\"><br \/><\/span> <span style=\"color: blue;\">The LBPD\u2019s decision to systematically destroy communications is an  outrageous violation of California\u2019s public records laws and the legal  obligation to preserve records that could come up both in criminal cases  and civil rights lawsuits against the department. And this decision \u2014  made by the police department in the city ranked the <a href=\"https:\/\/mappingpoliceviolence.org\/cities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">13th deadliest<\/a>  in the nation for police killing \u2014 is also a glaring example of the  mindset of impunity that prevails in some police departments.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>We really need a Federal law enforcement agency which is single tasked with policing the police.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It appears that, in violation of California law, police are using disappearing message apps so that there will be no proper record of their misdeeds: In a disturbing trend, government officials and police departments have been thwarting public oversight by using communications apps that automatically delete messages.
