{"id":178738,"date":"2018-09-02T19:59:00","date_gmt":"2018-09-03T00:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2018\/09\/02\/the-last-time-we-did-this-we-created-al-qaeda\/"},"modified":"2018-09-02T19:59:00","modified_gmt":"2018-09-03T00:59:00","slug":"the-last-time-we-did-this-we-created-al-qaeda","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.panix.com\/~msaroff\/40years\/2018\/09\/02\/the-last-time-we-did-this-we-created-al-qaeda\/","title":{"rendered":"The Last Time We Did This, We Created Al Qaeda"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>An anonymous source at the White House has stated that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/global-opinions\/how-to-stanch-syrias-bloody-final-showdown\/2018\/08\/30\/ea29f926-ac94-11e8-b1da-ff7faa680710_story.html\">they will do whatever they can to continue the civil war, and hence the misery, in Syria<\/a>.<\/div>\n<p>If this sounds familiar, this is exactly the same policy promulgated by Jimmy Carter and Zbigniew Brzezinski when they decided to foment a civil war in Afghanistan, which directly led to the formation of Al Qaeda, and indirectly to the 9\/11 attacks:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\"> As the Syrian tragedy lurches toward a bloody final showdown in Idlib province, the Trump administration is struggling to check Russia and the Assad regime from an assault there that U.N. Secretary General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres <a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2018\/08\/1018002\">warns<\/a> would be a \u201chumanitarian catastrophe.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The administration\u2019s efforts are so late in coming, and so limited, it\u2019s hard to muster much hope they can reverse seven years of American failure. But at least the administration has stopped the dithering and indecision of the past 18 months and signaled that the United States has enduring interests in Syria, beyond killing Islamic State terrorists \u2014 and that it isn\u2019t planning to withdraw its Special Operations forces from northeastern Syria anytime soon. <\/p>\n<p>\u201c<b><span style=\"font-size: 100%; font-variant: small-caps;\">Right now, our job is to help create quagmires [for Russia and the Syrian regime] until we get what we want,\u201d says one administration official, explaining the effort to resist an Idlib onslaught<\/span><\/b>. This approach involves reassuring the three key U.S. allies on Syria\u2019s border \u2014 Israel, Turkey and Jordan \u2014 of continued American involvement.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>(<i>emphasis mine<\/i>)<\/p>\n<p>Note that the author of this piece, David Ignatius has been a tool of the CIA for his entire career, and the US state security apparatus in general, and the CIA in particular, has been agitating for regime change since the start of unrest in Syria, and they are unwilling to let it go.<\/p>\n<p>Once again, I return to this quote about the intelligence establishment:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: blue;\">It is not the story of men and women who have a better and deeper understanding of the world than we do.
