The grand jury investigation will focus on whether Kobach, a champion for restrictive voting laws and anti-immigrant policies, mishandled voter registration information in the 2016 election, the <i>Lawrence Journal-World<\/i> <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.ljworld.com\/news\/2018\/aug\/31\/kansas-supreme-court-agrees-douglas-county-must-summon-grand-jury-to-investigate-kobach\/\">reported<\/a> on Friday. <\/p>\n<p>Kobach narrowly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/politics\/2018\/08\/kris-kobach-is-the-gop-nominee-for-governor-of-kansas\/\">defeated<\/a> Jeff Colyer last month to become the Republican nominee for Kansas governor in this November\u2019s election. He will now have to run for office while being investigated for whether his office was \u201cgrossly neglectful with respect to their election duties,\u201d and engaged in \u201cdestroying, obstructing, or failing to deliver online voter registration.\u201d Kobach denies the allegations. <\/p>\n<p>The call for the investigation of Kobach began in 2016 with a petition from Steven Davis, a Democrat who unsuccessfully ran for state house in 2016 and 2018. Davis alleged that Kobach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kansascity.com\/news\/politics-government\/article212811854.html\">intentionally failed<\/a> to register voters who tried to do so online in 2014. His petition was initially rejected by a state district court due to a lack of evidence. He filed a new petition in August 2017 after the Kansas state legislature allowed people to appeal petitions that are rejected. <\/p>\n<p>The district court rejected Davis\u2019 petition again, but a Kansas appeals court reversed the district court in June by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kansascity.com\/news\/politics-government\/article212811854.html\">ruling<\/a> that it mistakenly required \u201cspecific allegations of a crime, when only general allegations are required by the statute.\u201d On Friday, the Supreme Court denied Kobach\u2019s request to review the appeals court decision, meaning that a grand jury will be summoned.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is going on while Kobach is running for Governor.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know if it will bear any fruit, but at the very least, it should make him a bit more circumspect about misusing his powers as Secretary of State to tilt the election in his favor.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Kansas Supreme Court has ruled that a grand jury will be empaneled to investigate Kris Kobach&#8217;s refusal to properly rocess voter registrations as Secretary of State: The Kansas Supreme Court is allowing a citizen-initiated investigation of Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach to proceed.
